John Ro Myung was born on January 24, 1967, in Chicago, Illinois, although he grew up in King's Park, New York. He played the violin from age five until the age of fifteen, when he was asked to play bass in a local band. He has played bass ever since, being influenced by Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, and Cliff Burton.

He enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston with his childhood friend, John Petrucci. It was there they met Mike Portnoy and founded Majesty, later Dream Theater. He has penned lyrics to such Dream Theater favorites as "Learning to Live" and "Trial of Tears". He also follows a strict practicing regimen, warming down after shows as well as warming up before.

John has collaborated on several projects, including Platypus with Ty Tabor, Rod Morgenstein, and Derek Sherinian, and The Jelly Jam, consisting of the same lineup sans Sherinian. He's also collaborated with Gordian Knot and Explorer's Club. John has released one instructional video, entitled Progressive Bass Concepts.

John lives on Long Island with his wife, Lisa, and sons Christian and Brandon.
