JD, Venom more influential?  Really?!  If anybody in the shock rock genre it would be Alice Cooper and Kiss.  Venom was a bleep on the radar.
Venom kickstarted the entire Black Metal movement. Hardly a bleep on the radar

Venom did not start the BM genre, they had an album called Black Metal.
They were always strictly NWOBHM with some thash infuences.
They are also by far the worst live band I have ever seen.

I've never even heard of Venom.  Now, it's not like popularity has anything to do with musicians' influences, but if a regular joe schmo hasn't heard of them, I'm willing to bet they weren't 'top 10 ever' material in any category as broad as most influential in rock.

Can't say I'd mention anyone that hasn't already been said.  Chuck Berry, Elvis, Beatles, Zeppelin, Floyd, Sabbath, Deep Purple all definitely influenced the music of the 70s onward.  You look at Metallica, Maiden... they've had a huge impact on the 90s onward, as well as a huge impact on "metal", arguably a sub-genre of "rock".

Top influences of all time would have to be the originators back in the 60s and 70s.... as their influence continues to cascade down.  When a band today says they were influenced by Metallica, who originally were influenced by Sabbath/Purple/Zeppelin, who then is 'more influential'?  Clearly earlier acts.

Hendrix also has to be up there, as any prominent guitar player from the 70s/80s heard his music and had no idea that a guitar could make that kind of sound.  The experimentation that he created has never been duplicated (imo).

So I just checked, and, uh, you are one of the two who haven't sent.

Me neither. Other than my favorite Spider-Man villain, of course.

Were you alive in 1982?

I'm sorry, but I hear that explanation (or definition if you like) quite a bit, and I think it is CLASSIC revisionist history.

The term "Black Metal" did not exist until that album came out.   Saying Venom is not black metal is like saying Black Sabbath isn't heavy metal.

Venom was a horrible band...  But it seems weird to me now, to see all these bands that appeared at the same time between 1981-1983...all with comparable popularity among a burgeoning fanbase of kids looking for something more extreme than the norm...and then see some of these bands convert to super stardom, and others just get completely forgotten.

Influencing subgenres in the metal genre, like power metal or black metal, still doesn't make you even close to one of the 10 most influential rock bands.

Thank you Jammindude, and to people saying I'm wrong for claiming that they're a top 10 band, I'm not saying they are, merely that they're more than a tiny blip on the radar.

For the second time i will repeat.  NOONE EVER CLAIMED THEY WERE TOP 10!

TAC

I don't quite understand all the Dylan talk. I grew up on rock radio and the only Dylan Classic I had ever heard was Like A Rolling Stone.

Rock is more general but I've never really heard Dylan being cited as an influence. I've heard Alice Cooper cited way more.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Agreed. But I guess it's only natural that a prog metal forum would lean heavy toward the metal side.
