Watching Rainbow Live In Germany 77 now. I would also like to mention how much Cozy Powell is missed.
Watched that at the shop today.  It's interesting seeing Dio sing Mistreated, since it's not really the sort of thing you expect from him.  He sounds great on it, though.  Of the various DVDs I have with Dio, it's probably my favorite, though it's honesly a little too much Blackmore wankery for my taste.

I'm alright with Cozy.  The guy was a machine, but it seemed like his bag of tricks was kind of small.  He was always rock solid, but never spectacular (except in the degree of his solidness).

I've always loved Ritchie Blackmore's wankery (see my Favorite guitar player thread) and could never get enough of it.  That said, I think one of the key differences between Rainbow and Deep Purple was that, Blackmore's Rainbow never had the keyboard wizardry of Jon Lord to balance it all out.  The man in black always ended up taking over the Rainbow show, whereas in the old days with DP, he had to duke it out with Lord on the wankery front, which resulted in a lot more interest and fireworks in the music itself.

I agree, Cozy Powell didn't seem to offer much as a technical player, but he did have that unmistakable signature sound... one of the heaviest drummers I've ever heard.

Very good observation about Blackmore and Lord.  My problem is that I'm a pretty marginal Blackmore fan, and Dio was one of my very favorite people in the industry.  I recognize that Rainbow was Blackmore's gig, but watching that concert it kind of came across as a Blackmore concert with 4 backing guys like some motown house band.

As I entered this thread "Night People" came on.  :metal

Dr. SeaWolf

I've been listening through Dio's stuff in the car on my way to and from work the past couple of days.  I forgot how much amazing music the man's lent his vocals to.  The run of albums from Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow through Last in Line is just so amazing.  In those 7 albums worth of music, there's maybe 3 or 4 filler or mediocre songs total.  :metal

SPNKr

Shit like Stargazer, Neon Knights, Heaven And Hell, Children Of The Sea, The Sign Of The Southern Cross, etc. is amazing.

The Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Dio's funeral...absolutely disgusting.  >:(

I just hope they don't disturb what will be a very sad day for many people and I hope people give them a piece of their mind as well.

Huh picketing a funeral full of metal heads...smart :neverusethis:

I hope no one puts up with those stupid fucks. They really need to be taught a lesson, too bad no matter what happens they'll never learn. So I'll settle for a savage beating.

skydivingninja

Fuck Westboro Baptist Church.  Not just this plan to picket Dio's funeral, just in general.

SPNKr

What bastards. I don't think they'll be able to picket his funeral. I didn't read all of the report but I came across the Isaiah thing and that was just monkey shit.

:rollin @ the facebook.

That's just sad....if these inbred bastards show up.  Some of the Blabbermouth responders had the right idea.  It would be awesome too get 100 or so guys with boom boxes pretty much surrounding these ass clowns.  My twist would be instead of those boom boxes pounding out Dio, they should pound out some serious Christian Metal like Deliverance, Saint, Exodus and Bloodgood. :metal :metal

Here's a sampling of Deliverance....  I defy anyone to say this isn't some kick you in the face Metal  :yarr

Those Westboro jackasses didn't even get his real last name right.  Dio never claimed to be a devil-worshiper (in fact, he sang Christian lyrics on a Kerry Livgren album!), I don't believe his band members have never worn "pentagons" (I'm guessing they mean pentagrams), and what's this bit about encouraging Sorcery?  What the hell is wrong with these people?  What happened to the commandments about lying or bearing false witness?

Devil worshiping = sorcery = equal the Horns  :metal = old thing his grandmother(?) used to do to ward off evil spirits or "the evil eye". Black sabbath have worn pentagrams; this is all enough for those fucktards.

I don't believe Sabbath ever wore pentagrams.  They generally wore large cross necklaces, if I'm not mistaken.

I could also be mistaken, I just recall seeing. Meh these idiots don't need an excuse, I'm surprised they haven't called him homosexual.

Dr. SeaWolf

They also claim, based on their misspelling of his real last name, that he's related to Gen Padova, who is a well-known porn actress according to Wikipedia.  Where do they get off outright lying about him like that?

Does anyone no for sure? He very well could be. It's not like it would tarnish his name to be related to a porn star. Huh her first anal seen was a DP lol

Dr. SeaWolf

Her last name is "Padova", his last name is "Padavona"... not the same. :P  Also, their relation would be noteworthy enough to include on her wikipedia page, if it were true.

edit: Also, I agree, it wouldn't necessarily tarnish his name to be related to a porn star.  It just irritates me that these supposed Christians are outright lying, breaking their own commandments, in order to condemn another person as a sinner.

Ben_Jamin

Those little devils and their pitchforks. Somethings bound to go down if they do head out

Dr. SeaWolf

I honestly hope that the WBC aren't met with violence at Dio's funeral... that will only feed their martyr complex.

This especially.  The anti-protest group with a bunch of boomboxes blasting Dio/Rainbow/Sabbath/etc. would be a good counter though.

Dr. SeaWolf

Yeah, that would be far preferable :D

faemir

I feel ashamed that they call themselves christians.

There is a really good counter to them, I'm trying to remember what it was though, i'll edit my post when I find it, was really clever.

edit: I remember now, basically they protested some Uni for some reason, and one guy starting taking collection for charities that are exactly what WBC hate, right next to the WBC picket. Nice twist there.

Also, I remember at another uni some guy had a sign saying "gay for fred phelps" which made me laugh.

Go back in time and make sure they were never born?

And I agree with you all, FUCK THE WBC.

EDIT: Nevermind

Yeah, Dio has a lot of miles on him. Consider that he turned 18 in 1960!! He's older than my parents!

The running joke for my family was that my dad was the drummer for Cheap Trick(My dad was a spitting image of Bun E. Carlos) and he told us that when we went to bed he left for the show! :D
