I'd rather James solo than DT at the moment.  They better make time haha.

I've probably listened to Impermanent Resonance more than the last 3 DT albums combined. I just don't know where they find time for side projects.

YtseJam

Has he ever played out live supporting any of these side projects?

When do James and JM have the time for a side project? When DT write their new albums ;)

Sadly true, and you can add MM as well. Next album they should take a "Fragile" approach and let individual members write songs. That would change things up for sure.

I would be all for this.

James played a few solo shows when Elements of Persuasion was released.

A tour was on for SI I think it was, but passport issues came into play and the tour was called off.

I'm listening to the I Will Not Break EP.  :metal

I didn't bother.  Seemed like a waste of time and a cash grab.

Bolsters

If you didn't have any of those bonus tracks that EP might have been worth it. But I already had them, and I thought the electronica remixes sucked, so I didn't bother.

Yea my buddy's band was slated to open for them on a stop but the tour fell through.

Some of you know that James worked with Tim Donahue (Mike Mangini too on drums), it's called Madmen and Sinners. Tim Donahue, after that made a album called Madmen and Sinners Pt II but never realesed but only performed live.

There is another 4 outtake tracks from Madmen and Sinners Pt I.

1-Falling Sky
2-History Repeats
3-A Heartbeat Away
4-All That Remains

Here it is: https://soundcloud.com/donahue-tim/tim-donahue-with-james-labrie-mike-mangini

I love Madmen and Sinners. It's absolutely one of the James' darkest and intense vocal work.

wolfking

You know, I own that Madman and Sinners album and have for a long time, but I couldn't tell you a thing about it.  Never gave it a chance.  Should revisit it.

Never heard of it. Does James sing on the entire album or just a few songs? Mangini too?
What year?

He sings in the entire album. Children of the Flame and Million Miles got a lot of aritime from me back in the day.

That's one of the albums that made me a fan of JLB (even before I really got into DT). I can't even choose a favourite song, I love the power and intensity of that album, very impressed by Tim Donahue as well.

MirrorMask

The title track is impressive. It has a very great buildup, and it's sill kinda simple without having the overload of notes that sometimes DT used in their style. I don't even see it out of place on a DT album, it's like a very minor Octavarium, starting slow and then reaching the big climax.

SeRoX

Sadly, people seem to miss Madmen & Sinners and Frameshift albums. Those are James' best work, imo outside DT.

TAC

I literally had never heard of M & S before yesterday. I do have the Frameshift album. I need to bust it out.

BlobVanDam

I've heard of them, but have never had any interest in them. I generally find JLB's vocals outside of DT in that era to be rough, and I'm not into proggier stuff outside of DT (are these both prog?) I didn't enjoy the Mullmuzzler albums for those reasons.
I've loved the "solo" stuff though, and hope we get another one sooner rather than later, as I prefer it to recent DT at this point.

TAC

I'd take the two Muzzmuzzler albums any day over the last couple JLB albums.

BlobVanDam

Each to their own! It largely just comes down to the style of those albums not personally being my thing at all rather than anything wrong with them, and perhaps the reverse holding true for you.

SeRoX

Another gem is Henning Pauly's Babysteps album. James shines on it.

I love Mullmuzzler so much, Confronting the Devil has, hands down, maybe the best agressive vocal by James. I love James' solo albums too and even some of them better than DT's album but I admit I want another Mullmuzzler sounding type album.

BlobVanDam

Just checked it out, and those are some good growly vocals! In parts it reminds me of his vocals in the second verse of In Too Deep, which are also great aggressive JLB vocals.

But for realsies, my favourite gritty JLB vocals might just be the bridge section of Never Let Me Go, by Winter Rose.

No. He is on 4,10,13 tracks. Another progressive music project but a good one.

I had IR and SI cranking in the car over the long weekend, and I was never sure which one I preferred when IR came out, but now, IMO SI is the shit, amazing album.  Now have to see how EOP compares.  I love that album and always rated that higher than SI but I think these days SI might take the crown.
