After careful consideration I am now willing to proclaim Clockwork the best Rush album in many years.
Why would that proclamation require "careful consideration"? It's pretty obvious.

And exactly how many years, would you say?

19.  Since Counterparts.  Though S&A once held that title for me as well.

I say, "careful consideration" because every time Rush releases an album I get over zealous about it. I am a diehard fan so I look at them through rose colored glasses at times. I wanted to really absorb the record before jumping to the conclusion I came to very early. Its amazing.
and its my favorite since Presto.

Hearing Neil explain the story in that video makes me love the album even more.  :heart

I have to do this with my favorites too.  I think I realized I needed to when DT released Systematic Chaos.  I loved every song except TDEN and thought it was a masterpiece.  One year later I never listened to it and looked at almost every song with disdain.   :lol

And them now actually talking about bringing a string section on tour!!!!

If true, perhaps Losing It will finally get played, and Manhattan Project would also be a natural.

I can take or leave Losing It, but Manhattan Project would be fantastic, and most importantly this would just way increase the odds of The Garden being played.

King Postwhore

I think that's true most of the time with us fan boys.  At first I'm in love with everything but over time, if it's a great album, it has legs for me.  Certain albums get more spins that I connect with.

How about adding a choir so they could do the most epic version of Marathon ever? ;D

It's funny you mention Presto. As I was listening to CA the other day, I kept thinking of Presto. Like It's a heavier version of Presto.
I happen to like Presto a lot, too.

Presto was essentially the album that got me back into Rush, after basically an 8 year absence through the 80's. That is why I was so disppointed with Roll The Bones. I was prepared to be amazed but they just mailed that one in.

They knew something was missing from that record.  That's what got us Counterparts.  but I wouls love to see The Big Wheel played live.

I cannot agree with that.  Dreamline sounds mailed in?  Bravado?  Ghost of a Chance?  Really?

I am not saying Roll the Bones is perfect,  but mailed in?  No way.

Yeah, I don't believe Rush ever mails anything in. You may not always like the direction completely, but I think they just want to stay fresh and relevant. RTB does have too many filler type songs, imo, but its not a bad album. It just hasn't aged that well for me.

BanksD

Been spinning the new album for the past week or so and I love it. My favorites are Headlong Flight, The Garden, Seven Cities of Gold, The Anarchist, and Caravan.

It has more filler on it than any other Rush album and yes I'm looking at Bravado.
For the record, I love Ghost Of A Chance (one of the coolest songs in their catalog), Dreamline, and You Bet Your Life.

But I want Rush playing creative thoughtful music.  Not 4 minute verse chorus verse chorus solo chorus stuff. That's not Rush. Rush is better than that. I mean every band has a shitter in their catalog. While they completely lost me in the 80's at least they were trying to do something creative. RTB reeks of either a contract obligation or songwriter's block.  :)

I prefer Vapor Trails over this album by miles but it is better than S&A

That's cool. Its all good.

I think the Garden is guaranteed a slot on the tour, since every interview with Geddy has mentioned how proud he is of that song, and (at least here) fan response to it has been incredibly positive.

My favorite track on the album. Love it!

skydivingninja

I'm not sure if its the best on the album for me, but it is really REALLY damn close.

Also since they are talking a string section I think it is a lock.

TAC, we can agree to disagree. :)

Also, who else wants to see Alex sing lead vocals on I Think I'm Going Bald? :lol :lol

Sort of like McCartney singing, "When I'm 64". :lol

If I were him, I'd shave my head. Or maybe he should buy a nice hat.  ;D

at least he's not trying to cover it up with the rest of his hair or a wig.

Not for me. Always been a Rush fanboy but never got any love for TFE, VT or S&A. CA I  :heart :heart so far though and that's not likely to change.

And for the record RTB>Presto.

dbrooks22

I'll say it again:  I like Presto more, but RTB is a better record.

King Postwhore

Lowdz, we're talking when you first get an album and you really like it but over time you see the cracks.  So your telling me you hated or shall I say disapproved of TFE, VT or S&A from the start?

Presto came along at a magical time in my life. Pun intended. I love that album a lot.
How can you like one record more yet declare the one you don't like as much the superior record?
That does not compute well for me.

DarkEternalNight

Since they're bringing an orchestra on tour, I hope they do play Losing It. The one song I want to hear most.
