I first listened to JP's Suspended Animation and loved it, then later discovered DT by learning JP's biography.
The first DT album I heard was Systematic Chaos and my fav songs were PoW and ITPoE (well, I still like them but they aren't my "most" fav songs anymore)

My order:
- Systematic Chaos
- Images and Words
- A Change of Seasons
- Black Clouds & Silver Linings
- Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory
- Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
- [Live] Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York
- Octavarium
- Falling Into Infinity
- [Live] Score
- Train of Thought
- [Live] Chaos in Motion
- Awake
- [Live] Live at Budokan
- When Dream and Day Unite

Now, I'm planning to get either "5 Years in a Livetime" or "Once in a LIVEtime"

Dream Team

Images & Words (Good thing this my 1st one)

Scenes From A Memory
A Change of Seasons
Six Degrees

Systematic chaos
Awake
Scenes from a memory
Six degrees of inner turbulence
Train of thought
Falling into infinity

When dream and day unite

I think it was something like this...

RuRoRul

I did know random songs like Pull Me Under, Panic Attack, As I Am first, and I picked up random songs like Metropolis, Beyond This Life, Home and The Mirror after getting my first few albums. But in terms of full albums:

Train Of Thought
Systematic Chaos
Octavarium
Black Clouds And Silver Linings
Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence
Metropolis Pt. II: Scenes From A Memory
Images And Words
Awake
Falling Into Infinity
When Dream And Day Unite

MajorMatt

I&W
SFAM
Awake
ACoS EP
FII
SDOIT
ToT
WDADU
8V

BC&SL

Roughly in the right order I think. My dad bought I&W, SFAM & Spock's Beard's V & Snow all at the same time and I heard I&W whilst in the car. First time I heard PMU I was hooked :P.

robwebster

Yeah, I was sent songs by an enthusiastic friend at first, but when I started to get albums, it went something like this...

Train of Thought
Images and Words
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Awake
Scenes from a Memory
Falling Into Infinity
When Dream & Day Unite
Octavarium
Systematic Chaos
Black Clouds & Silver Linings

I got into them in 2004. Fell head over heels. Still am! Happy story.

I've been a fan since I&W

Same here, but I had a break in between where I heard some bits and pieces, but hadn't bought albums.  I liked DT from '92 on, but didn't really dig deeply into them after I&W until 1999, so mine goes something like this:

I&W
SFAM
LSFNY

Then I really started digging into the back catalog and ordered Awake and FII at the same time.  A little while later, I got the ACOS EP and 5YIALT not too long after that.

Starting with SDOIT, I got the rest of the discog in order, buying every release just as it came out.  Sometime during the SDIOT-TOT timeframe, I also picked up WDADU and LATM, but I don't recall exactly when.  I might have even gotten WDADU around the time 8VM was out.  I also picked up a second copy of LATM around the time 8VM was out because I wanted the import version with alternate track listing.

Interesting.  I'm curious about the alt track listing.  There's a regular import version (the one I have) and a Japan import.  Is that the one you're talking about and what is that track listing?

Also, a little back history on what led me to find out about WDADU.  I thought I&W was their debut album for about 4 or 5 years until I saw a copy of the LATM import in a Sam Goody music store.  Picked it up and saw 2 songs I didn't recognize (A Fortune in Lies, Another Hand - The killing Hand).  Somwhow, I managed to find a copy of WDADU.

I believe it went
Six degrees
Train of Thought
Awake
Scenes from a memory
Images and Words
Falling into Infinity
When dream and day unite

AFAIK - The European version has "Surrounded" while the Japanese version has "Another Day", which completes the sequence of AD-AH-TKH.

Once in a Live Time got me into these guys, it was my dad's. Then came
A Change of Seasons EP
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (I figured at this point that the title track was their magnum opus)
Scenes From a Memory (Now, IMHO, their true magnum opus)

I dunno what came after, but I think that hearing these first are what enabled me to get into them and their solo work. IDK if I would have if I had heard others first.

I think hearing music live (and well done) really gets me into the music. My dad bought Different Stages and that was the pebbles that started the avalanche that made me a humongous Rush fan for over ten years now. He also had Live Art by Bela Fleck & the Flecktones that got me into that group (and their respective solo careers).

I&W/Awake/Acos/FII for xmas

Wow, best Christmas ever.

Mine were mostly chronological starting with I&W. A friend loaned it to me somewhere around 1994, and I was hooked ever since. Got WDADU when the infamous re-release came out.

=============

The spaces indicate a break in time. I started with ToT and then proceeded to get the next three not too long after that. Then for whatever reason I took a break for a little bit, ended up getting REALLY into DT again and bought WDaDU and Images around the same time, and I specifically remember receiving FII and Six Degrees in the same amazon order to finish off my collection at the time.

I checked my amazon account and those shipped to me in the last week of 2004, and from there I've bought every album since before release day. Not pre-ordered, I've had a physical copy of the last three albums the Friday or Saturday before release.

I'm a newer fan but i have known that DT exists for quite some time.
