Blind Faith FTW! Could probably even be in my Top 5. Those (vocal) melodies are just beautiful and that's the way an instrumental part is supposed to sound. Natural. SDOIT rocks!

Naikon

Can you put me in queue for the list? I'd love to share my top 50 list!

BlobVanDam

BITS is one of the best songs from ADTOE, but it wouldn't make top 20 for me (although very likely top 50). BF has moved up to easily top 10 for me. Amaaaaaaazing song, but took me a long time to appreciate it. :tup

It's really fun to see this much positive response to Blind Faith at 9! I didn't think it was this widely appriciated.

Rattlehead

Yeah BF is an awesome choice there, it would be right around there for me as well. Took quite a bit of time for me to appreciate as well but that was pretty much the case for all of SDoIT for me.

I think it is fairly well appreciated, I think it just seems to sneak under the radar a bit.

Naikon

I just signed up for the list... if everyone has this speed, maybe it will be my turn in 2 years?

Well, I've been waiting since well before ADToE was released. So maybe.

Elite

I can remember having to wait a full year before it was my turn.

I waited a good year and a bit as well, I can remember having to change my list around a fair bit to cater for ADTOE

There need to be two separate threads, just like the Ask *name* ones in GD. Sure, there would be two nearly identical threads in the same section, which is not always the best sight to behold on a board, but it would also speed up things a gread deal. Has this already been proposed and rejected? I can't believe nobody ever suggested this before.

I like this.

?

I agree that two threads would be a good idea - if things don't get any faster, DT may already have released the next album by the time my turn starts.

I can't believe it either.

We'll leave it as is for now because I don't have time to do it.  I will revisit the idea after the holidays.

08 - Trial of Tears (Falling Into Infinity)

Falling Into Infinity is a pretty weak Dream Theater album. But in the end the guys managed to put one song in that would be way above the rest in every way. That intro is great and the moment when the rest of the band kicks in is so groovy. Lyrics are awesome, another proof that Myung is a great lyricist.

Good and classy instrumental section that sounds a lot like the Dream Theater I know but also brings that new FII vibe into it that for any other song on this album would be bad, but for some reason works very well here.

07 - In the Name of God (Train of Thought)

One of my first DT loves. So massive all the way through. I love this song all the way from that mellow intro to the last epic fading tones and final piano note. The chorus is great, sort of soaring but does so with so much power. Instrumental section is awesome of course, with crazy solos and unisons from both Petrucci and Rudess. Myung gets some really fun stuff to do behind there too.

Everything from 10:25 and forward is just so great. The chorus obviously, that "does following faith, lead us to violence", the "wOOOhOOOhoooo"s, that background song that I forgotten the origin of. And of course...

Once again, ToT is low, the song from ToT is way too high for me

I've always wanted to say this! That part is so wonderful.

Scorpion

ToT is too low, but cool to see it here. ITNOG is great as well, my favourite off of Train of Thought.

Elite

Looking at my list, ToT is one spot too low. ITNOG is at least 50 places too high.

Rattlehead

I agree with your little analysis of ToT, especially the bit on Falling Into Infinity.  :lol Nice placement for each song too, at this point it seems like our preferences for DT songs are quite similar.  :tup

Both amazing songs that are top 10 worthy, and definitely among DT's best songs. :tup

06 - Finally Free (Metropolis Part 2: Scenes From a Memory)

WARNING: HEAVY SPOILERS OF THE MOVIES INCEPTION AND FIGHT CLUB

It's been a while since the last SFaM song, so here you are. Finally Free is pretty much what makes SFaM take that extra step for me. It's the ultimate plot twist of the album. It's like the scene from Inception where you don't see if the top falls over. Or the scene from Fight Club when we get to know that Tyler Durden was really Edward Norton all along. Awesome.

This song reuses themes from throughout the album wonderfully and it all comes together so beautifully. If The Spirit Carries On is the song that makes you go "oh wow, that was a cool album with a satisfying conclusion", this is the song that makes you go "dude... holy shit...". And if you know the meaning of the absolute ending with the final "open your eyes Nicholas" it just makes you go "DUDE. HOLY SHIT."

05 - Breaking All Illusions (A Dramatic Turn of Events)

The song that clubbed in the fact that Dream Theater is fine. Dream Theater is not going anywhere. Dream Theater isn't going to sink at all without Mike Portnoy. Breaking All Illusions is everything I wanted ADToE to be. Epic, progressive, complex in many ways. These were all something I very much felt was missing from the album before it.

This is also Myungs grand return to writing lyrics. And how great they are. That awesome mellow first verse with Myung's lyrics is just so great it's ridiculous. The only thing I would have liked to see more of in this song are the lyrics, because for such a long song, there are surprisingly little vocals. But what takes time from that is one of Dream Theater's most memorable and best instrumental sections. I can not express enough how this album was everything I wanted from the new reformed Dream Theater. That bluesy stuff going on in the middle is really cool too.

Epic outro and nice throwback to Far From Heaven there in the end. Overall; badass song.

So, with only four songs left, does anyone have any guesses for the top?

wasteland

I 100% agree on what you wrote about BAI. It's VERY nice to see it in the same position I would put it myself. Best DT song of the 21st century, by far.

As for Finally Free, it recently slipped out of the top ten, after more than three years. It will be back ;)

Another great batch, BInk! Carry on with

Metropolis
Learning To Live
Octavarium
Some Other Song

(in no particular order!)

Me and you both praise Finally Free. It really is among their best closers and a great end.
