I think they mentioned that she has a hip hop background rather than prog/rock, so I guess it's not as surprising. I'm curious now as to how she got hooked into the Mars Volta in the first place.

pg1067

Cool.

Interesting that she plays the kick drum without a shoe on her right foot but wears a shoe on her left foot.

The HEAVY ride cymbal was distracting.  Not surprising that she didn't capture a lot of the subtlety on the guitar solo.

This is probably a controversial take but a large chunk of Rush albums have terrible production and really do a disservice to the music.

Agree and for me they were so good live the studio versions seem bland in comparison to the live versions.

That blows my mind that any drummer even close to the rock genre has never heard a Rush song before.  :omg:

Whenever I hear something like that, I'm incredulous too.

hefdaddy42

That doesn't surprise me at all.

I'm more surprised that there are people that have never heard Beyonce than people that have never heard Rush.

As a general statement, I would concur.  But narrowing the field to "drummers", let alone "drummers in a band that plays rock-ish music"... that's where my surprise comes in.

I just googled Rolling Stone 100 greatest drummers.

Numbers 2 and 3 are Keith Moon and Ginger Baker.

I'm a rock drummer for 25+ years and I likely haven't more than a few songs from either. Just roll of the dice.

You play me a random (even semi-popular) song by The Who, or Cream and there's a high likelihood I have never heard it.

Also the list names Hal Blaine as number 5, just below NP and I have no idea who that is.

I know who Hal Blaine is, but I don't remember ever hearing anything he played on.

Hal Blaine was a session drummer. Probably one of the most prolific. He's played on probably thousands of hit singles.

I know you listen to the Beach Boys so you most definitely have heard him on lots of their stuff.

he also did the drums on the famous Elvis song that he did after MLK Jr was assassinated (If I Can Dream)

The Keith Moon sort of surprises me; The Who can be ubiquitous; if you've watched CSI, you've heard Keith Moon.

Ginger Baker is another animal.  I was just thinking about this a couple weeks ago; I got a copy of Wheels Of Fire in an auction, and I was marveling that a) Ginger Baker is a hell of a drummer and b) other than White Room, I hadn't heard any of those songs before.

Hal Blaine?  If you've heard "Good Vibrations" or "California Girls" by the Beach Boys, you've heard Hal Blaine.  "Strangers In The Night" by Frank Sinatra.  "I Think I Love You" by the Partridge Family.  "I Got You Babe" by Sonny and Cher.  "MacArthur Park", Richard Harris.

Simon and Garfunkel; Elvis; The Beach Boys; The Carpenters; John Denver.

He's the backbone of what's known as the Phil Spector "Wall Of Sound" and has two famous beats to his credit: the intro to "Be My Baby" and what became known as the "disco beat".

HOF

I figure it has as much to do with her age and where she grew up as anything. From a Modern Drummer feature in 2022:

QuoteThe Mars Volta has been an influential band for a long time. Throughout that time, they have had quite a few influential drummers in the band. Blake Fleming, Jon Theodore, Deantoni Parks, Thomas Pridgen, Dave Elitch, Willie Rodriguez Quinones, and now introducing... Linda-Philomène Tsoungui (also known as Philo.) So who is Philo, and where did she come from?

The answer is a long and very interesting story. Philo is a 30-year-old, highly educated drummer from Germany, with a very interesting and tumultuous background in classical percussion that resolved in a career playing drumset.

So she is 31 or 32 now, and would have been 24 or so when Rush retired. It would be pretty easy to grow up mainly in the 2000s without hearing Rush I imagine.

I've obviously heard a few The Who songs. Like I said a handful of songs.
But ask me if I've heard of Hal? I'll say no. Play me a song that isn't universally known? Don't know it.

But let's maybe stop being so freaked out that a young hip hop/kind of rock drummer hasn't heard Limelight and isn't a Rush person.

That doesn't freak me out at all.  I have a daughter that I use as a gauge.  She LOVES Tom Sawyer, but that's only because she walked in while I was watching one of the DVDs and she saw Neil playing.  She's even commented about Rush that "it's the band nobody listens to" because she never hears it in her travels (contrast that with Fleetwood Mac, Kiss, Van Halen, and several other bands that she hears all the time even if she doesn't actively listen to them herself).

Generally, I wouldn't be surprised by anybody under the age of about 30 or so not knowing bands from the 80s or earlier.

I used my kids as gauges for all sorts of things.  Coincidentally, last night, I was playing one of the "MLB: The Show" series of games last night.  Many years ago, I uploaded a bunch of songs onto my PS, so the game plays those between games instead of the songs that came with the game (none of which I liked).  At one point, my 22yo son emerged from his bedroom while I was taking a bit of a break, and "A Change of Seasons" was playing.  His near immediate reaction was "best Dream Theater song."  A few minutes later, he was taking my player's pre-game batting practice while "Tom Sawyer" was playing in the background.  In 2011, I took him to see Rush on the Time Machine Tour for his first concert.  Pretty much ever since then, he's been a hip-hop/rap guy, but he was bobbing his head along with TS and humming along as though it was his favorite song.  My kids used to refer to Geddy Lee as "the hippy," and I'm pretty sure they both know his name, but I doubt either of them would know Neil or Alex by name.

Fair enough.  I mean, I skimmed by "Celebrity Family Feud" last night, and had no clue who the two "families" were.  When Harvey introduced them, the 'head' of the family were both 3-time Grammy winners.  Ok, I guess they're famous, but not in my world.

I wouldn't say I'm freaked out, just very surprised.  Again, she is in the "world" of rock drumming, and doesn't know anything from the person most universally accepted as the greatest rock.

Also, we all know Rolling Stone lists are a joke.  :)

It's an ongoing discussion with my wife. She watches all these shows with "celebrities" and "stars" and I consistently ask "where are the celebrities? When do they come in?"

If the celebrity happens to be an actual musician, even if it's a genre that I cannot stand, I will usually acknowledge them for their celebrity status. But I cannot stand it when someone becomes a celebrity for literally nothing. The Kardashians and Paris Hilton were the first wave, but there's been an entire generation of so-called "celebrities" that are only famous because they managed to say "look at me" online in a way that someone noticed.

Coincidentally with the Family Feud discussion in another thread....

The Dodgers decided not to play in Philadelphia last night, so I changed the channel and found "Family Feud through the years" thing.  It was basically an hour long "best of" show hosted by Steve Harvey.  It culminated with "September" and was a lot of fun.  I then watched the beginning of the celebrity episode:  "Megan Thee Stallion" and somebody called "Ne-Yo."  I turned it off before the first face-off.

jingle.boy

Yeah... that's what I caught a bit of as well - unfortunately, just the last segment of the "through the years".  Never knew Al Roker was a host.

Ray Combs was creepy as fuck.  I mean, so was Dawson, but that was acceptable in the 70s.

Apparently Roker hosted six episodes of Celebrity FF in the summer of 2008 because John O'Hurley, who was the current host of the regular version, was busy doing something called "Secret Talents of the Stars."

I love Ginger's ( and Jack Bruce's) work apart from Cream. I once saw Ginger Baker when he was close to 80 sitting about 30 feet away at a local club during his last US Tour and the guy was en fuego. The only guy I saw who MIGHT have been better at that age was Carl Palmer and he's a bit younger than that and maybe not quite as creative.

I think it sounds great too but Alex being Alex I really want to hear what he did with it.

I'm in for both Geddy and Alex's CD's for the bonus instrumental tracks and the regular Victor black vinyl because it was never released on vinyl before. (Not bothering with all of the vinyl color variations. Don't appear to be in that demographic.)

I also had no issue with how Victor sounded. Was thinking of skipping the reissue but the remix and bonus tracks has me interested.

I'm good with Ged. Picked up the Record Store Day vinyl of his album last year, I think, which also included the remastered album download.
