I would be content with this set for MN

I just want ITNOG instead of "As I Am" and that would be PERFECT!
Oh, I would be happy with that instead... plus it'd be a longer set

Montreal, QUE - 8/12/09

1. A Nightmare to Remember
2. A Rite of Passage
3. Hollow Years
4. Prophets of War
5. The Dance of Eternity
6. One Last Time
7. Solitary Shell
8. As I Am
-------------
9. The Count of Tuscany
This has to be one of the weakest setlist of the tour so far.
Really?  I mean, if they replaced RoP, PoW, and AiA with Metropolis, Erotomania, and Voices, it would be a perfect setlist IMO.
That's pretty much what I said...
Nope, that's not anywhere close to what you said.
You admit that if they replaced a third of the set, it would be perfect.  Which means a third of the set isn't that good, which is along the lines of what he said.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

MP said that the Montreal show was the best of the tour so far.

Also, JR had a keyboard solo before PoW.

QuoteI don't BS....I only say it if I mean it....

Last night in Montreal was indeed the best audience of the tour so far...excitement, energy and passion in the air all night long...
(not to diss any other PN09 shows, as there's been many great ones so far....but Montreal is the clear winner so far...)

MP commented on the show being the best of the tour right before leaving the stage. No surprise as 90% of the time I've seen live bands in Montreal they comment about how we are the best crowd in North America.

I agree that the setlist was kinda weak. When they left the stage for the 1st time, I was so disappointed that they played only 1 pre SFAM song, that I had a hard time enjoying "The Count of Tuscany", which is IMO a pretty average song. I mean, I just couldn't believe that they didn't play any song from Awake. I know that I can't blame MP for leaving Images and Words out of the set since they cover the whole album span of their last 3 shows in Montreal. However on the 4 shows they only played 2 song from awake (Lie and CIAW).

I just really really hope that I'll get to hear either The Mirror, Voices or Scarred live next time.

The improvs were good, but honestly, after watching ZPZ, I have to admit that DT's improvised section in Solitary Shell was a bit boring.

Hollow Years was awesome and so were JP's solos. But did anyone noticed when he did that string skipping thing that really didn't fit at all in there?

GuineaPig

Yep.

It was also lame that a lot of the crowd decided to sit for the first part of Hollow Years just 'cause Labrie was sitting.

I'm thinking its about time for them to play In The Name of God again.

Nic35

When do you think they will start doing the BC&SL world tour ? The PN tour finishes October 31, so I assume that they will take a break and tour again in late winter/ealry spring. What do you think ?

ResultsMayVary

They are touring in December in Australia and New Zealand for a select few dates (around 6 or so...) and then they'll take a Christmas/New Years Break with their families.

Then they might start touring in January sometime and they may hit Asia/South America in January/February depending on when they start in January. That would allow them to possibly start the US Headline tour in March/April and that tour could last a month or more if Mike holds true to his statement when he said he'd make it to all the places PN09 didn't go to regardless of cost.

I personally can't wait for the Ohio show.

Nick

I wouldn't put money on an Ohio show. It's very likely, but the statement Mike made was not about Ohio. He specifically said he would go to Phoenix and Texas. I would not be surprised if a spot like the Northwest got neglected again, same with Ohio.

cyberdrummer

I've still got my fingers crossed for another (even if it's quite short) European leg.

It's looking like this *may* be all the dates....

I wish we could play everywhere, but there are many variables that make it impossible...

I must go on record and let you all know that I have been FIGHTING for shows specifically in Houston, Dallas and Phoenix...really, I've been totally pullin for em...but its just not looking good....

Frankly, the promoter's offers in those markets are not very good and for us to stay out those few extra 3 or 4 days at the end will put us in the red (we have to pay *alot* of overhead to make Progressive Nation happen.....the 3 extra bands, extra crew, catering, stage and venue time, etc. all comes from DT's pay)

So I made my manager and agent *promise* me if we can't swing it this time, it will happen regardless of the expense, when we do another US run in the spring....

MP
Your right that his isn't specific about Ohio and the Northwest/British Columbia but according to MP.com, DT has played at least one Ohio show every world tour so i'm betting on at least one if not two.

If they play at least one show in Ohio, i would definitely bet Cleveland.

Nick

Yeah, like I said I highly doubt that Ohio will be skipped, I just wanted to point out that Portnoy didn't promise it. :)

Well what I thought was especially lame was how low the stage was. It's as if they expected people to sit during the whole show. The view was perfect for the opening acts, but as soon as everyone stood up for DT, I couldn't see much of the band, cause I was in far back.

I disagree whole-heartedly.  Maybe if they covered something like Xanadu, or something else Rush does often, then ok.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that I've heard that Rush themselves have never played The Camera Eye?  3 years ago on the 8vm tour, we got Jacob's Ladder - something rarely/never played by Rush.  On the ToT tour, it was A Passage to Bangkok (before Rush dusted that one off).  So, I totally enjoy getting something that is unique.  Just because it was written and recorded not by DT doesn't bother me.  Great songs, great performances - that's what we go to concerts for, isn't it?

Anyway, it's late, so I'm only going to post some quick thoughts on the concert.

StS and Bigelf were good.  I like both, so it was great to see them in concert.  Both were out in the concourse signing shit and meeting the fans afterwards.
Zappa - didn't expect much since I don't listen to them.  They were good, and quite musically talented - man they can jam... and that's what they did.  MP came out for Bobby Brown again.
DT - great performance.  James' frontman skills are even better this tour.  Vocals were great - he nailed 'pleasantly amused enough to staaaaay' in Voices (but chinced out on 'deliver us from darkness', and 'only in your mind').  They cut the heavy verse in Voices at 3:18, as well as the second verse in Take the Time (I guess James can't hit those stanza's anymore - even though he says his voice is better than it's been in years).  I think they also needed every minute they could, as they went right to 11pm, and I'm pretty sure there's a curfew at the Amphitheatre.  Keytar was in full force for TtT.  Personally, I would've prefered PoW over Forsaken, but I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked Forsaken.  The Camera Eye was awesome.  They nailed it.  When JR came out for the the first couple of notes, I was speachless.... I thought it was going to be a teaser (cuz they teased with Xanadu on the CiM tour), but then they played the whole song!  :omg: Fucking loved it.

I'm surprised at how much backing tracks they use nowadays.  I always liked the fact they did the full performance on their own, but with some of the lines from ItPoE, and now lots from ANtR and even the opening accoustical guitar in TCOT ... well, I'm surprised.

All in all, even though it was less than 2 hours, I'd rank it right up there with all of the previous DT concerts I've seen.  Can't wait until next summer when they're back, and they better come back to Toronto - it was a packed house... I'd say at least 6000-7000 people.  Almost the entire seated section had people.

But i could argue that i go to a Dream Theater show to see Dream Theater perform their music. :metal
