Just gave Fallout another spin, in order to try and grasp it. This time, there were several instance where I thought "Oh yeah, I remember this bit" and liking it. Most notably the piano section around 10 mins in. So it's fared a lot better this time round. It will click with me eventually. I'm determined.

At the request of our own lonestar, I'm gonna post about my journey through IQ's catalog. Evermind introduced me to them with The Road of Bones back in 2018, which has become one of my favorite records, and their latest album Resistance is marvelous. But they're both meaty albums with a lot to digest, so I haven't explored their back catalog... until now. About to start with Tales From The Lush Attic. Will report back. I'm excited to hear their beginnings and how they've changed (or stayed the same?) over the years. The sound they have right now is magnificent, so I'm hoping to discover a lot of gems in the older albums.

I did exactly what you are doing starting a couple years ago.   I hope your journey is as fulfilling as mine was.   Those first two albums are EXTREMELY dated in their sound and take some getting used to.    IMO, Tales sounds exactly like Genesis in a parallel universe where Peter Gabriel never left, and this is the follow up to The Lamb.    But if you're not an early Genesis fan, you may not like it.   The difference in going from RoB and Frequency back to Tales was extremely jarring, but now I think it's an amazing album.   I *HIGHLY* suggest finding the newest remix/remaster if you can.     I started by buying the standard remaster (before the newest remix/remaster was released) and I grew to like it, but sonically it still left alot to be desired.    Then when they released the remix/remaster with a bonus disc of extra stuff (including MP3s of the original cassette demo) I decided to buy it again, and I'm glad I did.  It's a HUGE improvement.

I just listened to The Last Human Gateway three times in a row because it's such a monster track to start the album and I love the sounds in it so much. Wow. More to say later after I hear the rest of the album one, two, maybe three times. I am having fun already.

Got it loaded up on my TV already...even bought a new sound bar yesterday. IQ shirt on, I'm ready to go!!!

jammindude

Interesting opener. But the segue into SS was fantastic.

Anyone else have really quiet sound? I'm having to turn my system way up

They've been opening with Alampandria since they put the album out. Interesting, but it works.

Killing it on SS though.

Peter sounds really, really good so far.

jammindude

Ya I didn't look at the setlist at all, so this is all like watching it live for me. (Except I'm in my mancave.)

I always check their sets after each show, just as an exercise in self abuse. When I saw this one, I seriously let out a 'wtf....'

Like in bad??? I don't know what's coming next, but so far it's about what I would expect for a show promoting the album.

This track specifically.

The Walrus

Pardon me for interrupting the fun, as it seems something epic is happening during this show :)

Tales From The Lush Attic is a weird album. The first song is an epic that reeks of late-era IQ and I love it. But the rest of the record is like IQ meets Fish-era Marillion, and that's not a bad thing, it's just really jarring to hear so much speedy stuff from this group that hooked me with such a sedated sound. The two short tracks are really interesting, and the other longer songs have more of that late IQ vibe. The singer is the same guy, I assume? He definitely sounds more Genesis-y, Fish-y on this record. Although I do not like Genesis at all based on what I've heard (SEBTP, and a few other assorted songs I can't remember the names of anymore).

The version I heard is on Spotify; 6 songs, and it says it's from 1994 even though Wikipedia says it came out in '83, so I'm not sure if that's a remastered version or not. Spotify has the albums listed not in chronological order of release, unless it's in order of remasters or something, so I have to refer to Wikipedia for their discography.

Either way I really liked this album and I love the old, dated synth lead patch that's used throughout. I have an affinity for those synth lead sounds. Really looking forward to the next one, The Wake.

Yeah, they busted something really special out.

As to the album, yes it's a remaster. Yes it's the current singer, just when he was like 20. His voice really matures around Ever and Subterrenea into the current sound. They have another singer for albums 3 and 4. He's good, but they try to add some commercial touches to their sound which for me didn't totally go over.

jammindude

Yes. It's the same singer. He leaves for albums 3 and 4, but then comes back permanently from album 5 on forward.

And the big deal is that (ironically enough) they dusted off Last Human Gateway for the new set and I didn't know it was coming.

Peter sings on The Wake as well before leaving

lonestar

I know, it was a brain fart.

Fuck this song is supreme live. When I saw them in '94, they played the middle and end part, but it was split up in the show.

I need a fucking cigarette now.

jammindude

Everyone nailed it too. That may have been the best live version I've heard...although I think the only other one was from and older show on YouTube.

And now Frequency??  This setlist is killing it!!

lonestar

Right? Peter is so on, and the audio is just perfect. I really hope they release this.

jammindude

These guys are just so damn good live. I would on every single one of their home videos if they would release them.

There's a pro shot of a Frequency show on YouTube and there's also a complete performance of Subterranea. If those are from the official releases that are out of print, I would pay through the nose to get my hands on them.

lonestar

Subterrenea was an official release, I don't think Frequency was though.

Somewhere out there is a full audio of the first show I saw of them back in '94. There's one track on YT, and I've scoured trying to find it but no luck.

This looks legit actually...

jammindude

Zone 2, so that's no good.

Although now that I think about it, my computer plays that. Because my The Wake Live DVD is from another region and I can only play it in my computer.

I did just find a copy of Living Proof on EBay for $20 and snagged it.

lonestar

Excellent...

As Peter went full on in Road of Bones, someone in the chat said "here comes the PPE"....

jammindude

I've got my video at full screen. Is there a chat thread somewhere?

jammindude

OMG FURTHER AWAY!!!!

Yeah, I got it on my 40" for the show, and on my computer paused for the chat thread. It's very active, but all the band members are there, even Peter who usually avoids social media like the plague.

The Letter M

Anyone want to ask Mike Holmes about the PULSE project with Nick D'Virgilio, Geoff Downes, Tony Levin, and Rob Aubrey? It's been over 68 years since I've heard anything about it.

-Marc.

jammindude

Ten Million Demons gets a lot of flak. From what I've seen anyway. But I absolutely adore it. And it looks like it's just fantastic live!

Can you give me a link to the chat so that I can follow it on my phone or something?

lonestar

It's just the regular YT link.

jammindude

I managed to make a few comments near the tail end. But I was watching it directly from the official website. So I actually had to switch over to YouTube in order to see the chat feed. When I said hi from Seattle, Neil Durant actually tagged me to say hi back!
