Although LSoaD and THE are good songs, I can understand why someone wouldn't care too much about them. However, my username (or this emoticon: ???) is the perfect way to describe how I feel about seeing Surrounded in someone's bottom 20.

Good idea.  Within the DT community I have found that generally people fall into two different camps.  One that tends to like the more prog and a bit more mellow and the other that tends toward the metal, hard-edged side.  These are vary general descriptions, obviously there are degrees within each camp.

I say all this because I think that Bosk falls into the same camp as me.  I think this thread will tell me if I'm wrong.

So, just courious.  How is your theory playing out so far?

It might be a bit early to tell still.  Obviously the top ones are still in your top 50 so that doesn't say much.  When I look at, say the last 7-10 they are lining up.  It looks like we're headed in the right direction.  The only thing that threw me was the instrumentals.  I really thought we were on the same page with those.  I mean aren't you one of the few people that like The Ministry of Lost Souls for the instrumental section?

bosk1

No.  The instrumental section is great.  I hate The Ministry Of Lost Souls despite the great instrumental section.  I don't dislike instrumental sections.  But that isn't related to how I feel about instrumental songs.  I just often prefer songs with singing and lyrics to those without.

No problem, I won't hold that against you :)  Just keep your list going in the same direction and we'll be fine.

bosk1

:lol  I'll do my best.

Looks like 5 more until I get to the bottom 10.  I should have planned better so that instead of doing these last 3, I could have done 4, leaving another 4 before the bottom 10.  Oh well.  I'll release the next 5 tomorrow, do my top 10 break on Friday, and then start the bottom 10 on Monday.

bosk1

Next installment.  After this, I'll take a quick break to post my top 10 just for fun.  Monday, we'll start our countdown on the bottom 10.

36.  Regression - It's just fine for what it is.  Nice, mellow intro piece to set up Scenes before the bombast of Overture 1928.  I like it a lot as a start to the album.  But it's not something I would ever listen to on its own.  It's an intro, and serves its purpose well in that role, but isn't very strong as a standalone song.  Nor is it meant to.

37.  The Silent Man - Yeah, I know a lot of people like this song for its simplicity.  But it's just too stripped down and one-dimensional for me.  And I like one-dimensional music.  But this song just doesn't move me.  I enjoy the twist they put on it for Live Scenes.  That definitely takes it up a notch.  But as for the studio version, I don't hate it, but meh.

38.  Innocence Faded - This song would probably top out my bottom five if not for Score giving me a bit of an appreciation for it.  It has a few cool moments.  But aside from that, it does not feel cohesive, despite its shortness.  DT often does upbeat well, but this song (as well as a couple of others) just feels out of place in the DT catalog and leaves me a bit cold.

39.  Burning My Soul - This is a tough one to rate.  I love the heavy riff during the verse.  But the rest of the song just seems...silly to me.  The band are trying to sound pissed off, but on this song, they don't sell it at all, so it just sounds fake and contrived.  This is one of the few DT songs where I really do not like the lyrics either, for the most part.  And the "Mr. Roboto" voice on the chorus...don't get me started.  Still, I wouldn't mind seeing it live because it definitely sounds like a song that would get taken up a few notches and just be a blast in a live setting.  And something else it has going for it is that it automatically went up a couple of notches by having Hell's Kitchen amputated from it.  speaking of which...

40.  Hell's Kitchen - Just...huh?  Who thought it would be a good idea to play the same riff over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again for almost 4 1/2 minutes and call it a song?  Yeah, they do some neat changes with it, and yes, it does build in intensity, and yes, it does have some tasty JP guitar soloing over it.  But that does not a good song make.  I like it as an intro piece to Lines In The Sand, although it would be a better intro if it had a good 2:00 or so shaved off.  On its own, it bores me to death, and it is a VERY rare thing indeed for a DT song to do that.  But again, in the context of an intro for LiTS, it's actually decent, and I can derive some limited enjoyment from it in that context.

BUT I DON'T GIVE A SHIT
NOOOO

My least favourite DT song changes a lot. But right now BMS is probably it.

That's probably the only DT lyrics that actually make my cringe. Not to mention the vocal delivery.

The Bucharest version is killer.

bosk1

Is it on Bucharest?  I completely forgot.  Haven't watched that in ages.

Bosk, allow me to introduce modern pop music.

GasparXR

I really don't think the song sounds like the same riff for the entire thing. There's only a couple different themes, but they all expand upon the one before it.

Ruba

Seeing Innocence Faded on a bottom list makes me sad  :sadpanda:.

?

Hell's Kitchen may have just a few themes, but those themes are freaking wonderful.

Yeah, I think that's what's great about it.  It's subtle.  I think it's not like a regular song where it treats the listener like a beginner. This one you really have to listen to.

Oh, and by the way  . . .  instrumental!  Have I said that before?

bosk1

Quickly perusing my bottom 10, it looks like the only albums that are not represented by a song in the bottom are Scenes, Six Degrees, Train of Thought, and A Dramatic Turn of Events.  One album has three songs represented.  Another has two.  Interesting...

Marion Crane

Wow, Hells Kitchen is probably my favorite DT instrumental

Guessing SC has 3: POW, CM, Repentance ???

Scorpion

Nah, bosk likes CM. I'm guessing that it's Awake. Space-Dye Vest for sure, maybe Scarred and Lie? I dunno.

bosk1

Well, here's my top 10 for people to chew on over the weekend before I return to the countdown with my bottom 10:

1.  Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
2.  A Change of Seasons
3.  Octavarium
4.  Metropolis - Part I "The Miracle And The Sleeper"
5.  The Glass Prison
6.  Bridges In The Sky
7.  The Mirror
8.  Learning To Live
9.  Scarred
10.  Trial Of Tears

So that definitely rules out Scarred.  And I will tell you that both Lie and Constant Motion aren't far behind and are somewhere between my top 10 and my bottom 50, so you can rule both of those out as well.  As for the others...we'll have to see.  ;)

WOW! We are 60% compatible on our top 10.  Nice!

Crow

I get the feeling bosk would or does hate post-rock

umm 6DOIT wouldn't be anywhere near my top 10 but the other 9 are pretty awesome. don't think they would all be in my top 10 though... ACOS, Metropolis, TGP, Scarred, and Trial definitely all would, 8vm might be too.

interested in the rest of this

turns out signatures are fundamentally broken now so here's my passive-aggressive signature about signatures instead

I debated bumping 6 Degrees down just a bit.  I used to absolutely love it.  Toward the end of the Octavarium tour, when they had already been rotating WIMH/TTSTA and ATCR/Losing Time, and then they rolled out another two movements of the song, I went absolutely nuts because I knew they were going to play the entire thing at Radio City.  After having it redone and having played Score to death, and after Transatlantic did The Whirlwind, which shocked me that a band could release another huge epic that surpasses the quality of Six Degrees, I've cooled down on the song considerably.  I still love it, but would probably choose to listen to a lot of other songs in my top 10 more often.  But I still feel that it probably deserves to remain in that spot for awhile longer.  I'm sure it'll eventually fall a bit, but will still stay in my top 10 for sure.

I previously had Lines In The Sand as my #10, with Trial of Tears just outside.  But I've recently come to prefer Trial.

The writeup for Status Seeker has been crossed out - is this some kind of hint? ;)

I realized that I posted it twice, so I crossed out the second one.

Six Degrees
ACOS

Met-pt1
Bridges

Given the song lengths, I'd say we're about 90% compatible.  :lol

Ah, ok.

On a side note, I just discovered something that makes guessing the remaining songs a little easier for me...
