Galder quit Dimmu Borgir, likely due to the inactivity and lack of creative output.  I saw some comments that the last few releases (remixes, remasters, cover's album) were to satisfy their existing record contract, which makes sense.

I recently got into Old Man's Child a couple of years ago, so I'll be looking forward to a new album from them.

I just posted this in another thread, but it feels at home in the extreme metal thread as well, so here you go...

Today's musings are on the Italian record label I, Voidhanger Records.

I did a bit of reading up on the label this morning, prompted by the new release by Esoctrilihum; Döth-Derniàlh. This record is supposed to be out today but there is no sign of it on any streaming services yet. I had a look on Bandcamp, which led me to the I, Voidhanger page.

I was astounded by the bands signed to this label, and at some of the gorgeous album art. The biggest names on the label (and ones that I know have fans on DTF, as I first heard of them here) are Spectral Lore and Mare Cognitum. There are, however, a few other releases on the label that I really loved. 2023's Yearning: Promethean Fates Sealed by Fleshvessel and Determined to Strike by Sarmat. Lastly, all the releases by Esoctrilihum. I'm fairly new to the band but have digging into their releases and they are really fucking good.

I'm intrigued by the label, as they mainly put out really avant-garde extreme metal, and releases that challenge you as a listener (lots of albums that clock in at well over an hour and a half). Since getting obsessed with death metal label 20 Buck Spin earlier in the year, I think I'm looking for another extreme metal label that I can trust to put out stuff I'll be interested in, and listen just because it was released on that label. This could be that label.

I found a cool interview with the guy who started the label, Luciano Gaglio...

If any of this sounds interesting, give the article a go. You can sample many of the bands as you go through the interview as well. I've loaded up some of the most interesting looking releases, based on a mix of albums Gaglio mentions in the article, highest rated on RYM and just cool looking album art.

Here's a link to a Spotify playlist that has most of the label releases as well...

This will not be for everyone, but I know some of you will vibe with this stuff.

Edit: Oh, here's another cool link as well...

Yeah, I guess a good way to summarize it is that's a label that has lots of weird stuff

I have this album from I, Voidhanger...Panegyrist - "Hierurgy"

It's kind of theatrical black metal. Pretty good (it's actually weird, but not too weird ;))

I'll have a look at some of the links you posted...

Yea dude, they put out a lot of 'weird stuff', but not exclusively weird stuff. I like all the releases that have some jazzy element, or just super atmospheric black metal stuff.

Either way I'm digging in deep.
