I hope it's not just me, but Scenes from a Memory (metropolis pt.2) has to easily reach the top two album of dream theater. The brilliance, the music, the drums, keyboard, even the vocals.
I think this was Dream Theater's best album (it's all a matter of opinion.)
I have not been able to find many people who agree,
I understand.
For me it is,
1. Images & Words.
2. Scenes from a Memory.
I hope someone else agrees, because usually people will say DT was their favorite, which I do not agree one bit with that.

Now here's something we can agree on.

I love sparking controversy.  ;)

DT 12 the released album with Mike Mangini.

One forum topic asking favorite album, many say DT12.

RaiseTheKnife

Most people here rank Scenes in their top two.  Not this guy however.

I haven't met many people that do rank it in their top two...especially on these forums!

I know the album, but since its release, it has gotten VERY mixed reviews on this forum. I believe I've seen more negative than positive about DT12.

If you go look at the forum ranking albums, many rank DT12 pretty high.
Many people took time to adjust to the album, so I'm sure lots changed.

I prefer the Alternate mix, released on Ytsejam. Theirs a lot of things that got buried in the Kevin Shirley mixes, keyboards, guitars,  bass, drums. Beyond This Life really breathes and I enjoy it now, same with Through Her Eyes.

Tom Bombadil

I would place it in the 5-7 range. It's got some really good, and some really bad. But the vast majority think very highly of it.

Is that what you call it?

At any rate, a large percentage of the members here would rank SFAM at or near the top.

I would imagine that a rather low percentage would rank DT12 at the top.

I don't it's controversy when you say something that isn't true, it just... isn't true.

Anyway, I actually rate SFAM a lot lower than most people here probably do.

Zydar

It swaps between #2 and #3 for me, with Images as a constant #1. 6DOIT is the third one.

Exactly.

SFAM is top 3, along with I&W and Awake.

DT12 is probably somewhere in the middle (probably 7th or 8th, for me).

This for me , and toward the lower end of that range.  I rate DT12 higher than SFAM.

Scenes From A Memory will always be number 1. I think its my favorite album by anyone!

My Top Three :

1. Octavarium
2. Scenes From A Memory
3. Six Degrees.

The Holy Tune

SFAM is my all-times favourite, don't think it'll move to the second place. And DT12 is a mid-placed album. I don't think much of a debate is needed about this subject. People who don't have SFAM at their infamous "top two" are fewer then people who have it there.

SFAM
I&W

In variously shifting other depending on the day, but yeah.

Noahl, what crazy-ass forums put DT 12 above I&W or SFAM?

Sacul

Overall is freaking amazing, and it sits comfortably at #2 for me, but it isn't on the top because of The Dance of Eternity and some weird instrumental sections.

FlyingBIZKIT

SFAM is probably my number 2, but I'm considering dropping it a couple spots.

ThatOneGuy2112

Undoubtedly, SFAM is DT at their best. I can't think of a single moment that I don't like on the entire record. It's near-perfection at its finest and definitely a case where the whole is more than the sum of its parts.

I used to regard it as my favorite album of all time, but only recently have very few others breached that barrier. Still, I can comfortably regard it as one of my all-time favorites.

It is cool hearing things that can't be heard on the final mix, but besides that, the alternate mix is pretty bad.

:metal We have the same top 3! No wonder I like you.

There are few people who don't rank SFAM highly. Even so, I totally get why people don't like it so much, I just think they're crazy. That's fine too, as I'm all for crazy opinions!

And I don't know of anybody who ranks DT(12) as their favourite. It would only come top of my list if I was listing them backwards.

Zook

Is there a completely different vocal track on the alternate mixes or is that just the weird mix?

I did notice a different take at the end of Finally Free though.

You must be living in some bizarre alternate universe then :lol If you take a look at any "favorite DT album" poll here, the winner is always I&W or Scenes.

I do like SFAM and I see why people love it, but it hasn't aged very well for me, which is why I'd rank it 6th. Also, WDADU >>> DT12
