What do you think is the most universally beloved DT song?

A song in which a very high percentage of DT fans like, and would rank among their favorites?

Octavarium? Learning To Live perhaps?

....You Not Me?

Your thoughts?

I wanna say Metropolis Pt. 1, but like any song, I'm sure there are still a pretty good number of fans who don't like it as much as they should others.

Learning to Live perhaps. Haven't seen too much hate towards it.

That would be me.

I can agree with this statement. Another one that I think gets pretty universal love is Scarred ACoS and maybe TGP.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I feel like ACOS is probably the most likely one, though there are still some who don't care for it. Octavarium is probably pretty similarly rated.

TheCountOfNYC

I've never heard of anyone who doesn't like Take the Time.

KevShmev

Take the Time or The Spirit Carries On.

Both are songs just about every diehard fan loves, and most casual fans (yes, DT has these) love one or both of them.

adamack

Some really good answers. As others have said, ACOS, Take The Time, and Metropolis are definitely up there. As are the others (TTT, TSCO, TGP)

How about Breaking All Illusions? Anyone think it belongs with these other songs?

Sycsa

Definitely something off of I&W would be the strongest candidate: Metropolis, Take the Time, Learning to Live. Outside I&W, I'd only give ACOS and maybe Octavarium a shot.

I like TSCO, but for a long time I regarded it a simplistic and monumentally kitschy ballad. It clicked with me later on, but either way, it's not your typical DT song and - while it's certainly popular - I would be surprised if it were filed under "most universally beloved."

TAC

I would say that BAI is the most universally loved of the Mangini era. It's the only song from the MM era that I'd even consider putting in my Top 10, and it would be the back half of the Top 10 at that.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: DTwwbwMP on October 10, 2024, 11:26:46 AMDISAPPOINTED.. I hoped for something more along the lines of ADTOE.

Destiny Of Chaos

If I had to guess, I would say Metropolis.

Crow

Metropolis and ACoS are the two that spring to mind first. They are not very divisive songs last I checked. LtL too probably.
I've seen plenty of people who dislike Take the Time (even if it's *amazing*) so.

Yeah that's definitely fair to say, good call.

BAI is the first (hopefully not the last) Mangini-era song to break into the top tier of DT songs. Its 4th-place finish in DT The League 2014 testifies to this.

I think it's probably Metropolis or Learning to Live. ACOS and 8VM have their few critics.

Wow I never knew about DT The League! I Googled it, and found the link to the thread on this forum.

Looking through the brackets now, awesome idea. Sucks that I missed the voting :(

I always thought BAI was a tad overrated, although it is a pretty great song. But hey, things that people call overrated tend to be universally loved, so yes, it would definitely be one of them.

BlobVanDam

I'd go with Metropolis. While I don't often see it ranked as people's absolute favourite, I think it's the most universally liked song, and least controversial. Everything else seems to have at least some share of like/dislike.

Absolutely!  BAI definitely belongs with that group of songs.  Maybe even surpassing most or all of them.  BAI is probably my favorite DT song since SDOIT.  Yeah, it's that good.

fischermasamune

Metropolis, LTL, 8VM and BAI.

I don't like ACOS much, but a lot of people do. But is Take the Time universally acclaimed??

I think it's Metropolis or The Spirit Carries On. I think just about anyone who is at all into the band likes at least one and probably both of those two. I would say Pull Me Under is another decent candidate, actually.

YtseJamittaja

Does I&W have any universally lower rated song? I think all the songs are really popular and highly ranked among DT fans. Every other album seems to have one or more song(s) which seems to divide people's opinions.

Other than that, Octavarium should be there and TGP, maybe TCoT too. Lines in the Sand is also definitely in the list.

RedKlouD72

How about Overture 1928-Strange Deja Vu?

chaossystem

I don't think there's ever going to be one song that everyone agrees on.

Maybe you should have done this thread as a poll.

On the other hand, if you were to phrase the question as: "Which song do you think most people will identify the band with, or know them by?" The answer would most likely be "Pull Me Under."

RoeDent

It's safe to say there is a "god" tier of near-universally-loved DT songs. Metropolis, Learning to Live, ACOS and Octavarium. These are the Immortals.

Jaffa

I think Metropolis is the closest you're going to get to universally beloved.  I know there are fans who don't like that song, but in my experience, they are an extreme minority.

Two of those songs wouldn't even make my top 50. :lol (ACOS and LTL, both hugely overrated imo)

erwinrafael

I would guess that it's Metropolis Pt. 1.

Rodni Demental

I never quite understood the obsession with Octavarium, apart from the genius behind it.  :lol But it's just feels like a very contrived piece and it took ages to grow on me. Maybe that's a testament to it's greatness but I certainly wouldn't try turn people onto Dream Theater with the song, they'd get bored to tears for the first 10 minutes probably.

Metropolis was never a 'hit' for me from the first hearing it, although was certainly impressive which kept me coming back. With familiarity came appreciation, and I guess I never thought anything poorly of it, just didn't 'get it' at first.

Trying to think of songs that haven't been mentioned as much. Is there anyone who doesn't like Pull Me Under? I figured it was  universally loved song. Sure, I know a lot of people might be sick of it because of overlistening, or the band overplaying it, but does anyone actually think it's a bad song?

What about Voices? Anybody not like that one? Even if it's hardly the most popular song, I never really see any hate for it.

Considering the love for Metropolis, what about Home? That's as close to an indirect sequel as we've got without counting the entire album that it's from. No one doesn't like Home right?  :metal

The Root of All Evil seems to be one of the most beloved tracks from the 12SS, unless that title goes to The Glass Prison although I've seen some fairly polarising opinions more so on the latter.

Bridges in the Sky? I always figured that was equal or at least on par with Breaking all Illusions.

Finally, I want to say Illumination Theory but I've seen, quite frankly a very surprising amount of criticism for this one. But personally I think it just might be their best epic yet.

nicmos

Yeah, it's not ACOS.  That's a waste of 25 minutes (or whatever, it's been so long since I've listened to it, I no longer own it, I don't remember how long it is honestly.)

Surely someone could tabulate all the DT top 50 songs threads and find out which song shows up in the top 10 most often, or pick some other criteria by which to judge "beloved".  (could be least hated...)

In my experience, ACOS is pretty well liked (preferred over Octavarium as a epic by most at the very least). Just because you personally don't like it doesn't mean it's automatically out of consideration for the question at hand.

nicmos

I agree that the majority likes it.  And that's cool.  But there is a small minority that agrees with me, and we're pretty adamant about it.  Not trying to be a dick.  Just pretty sure it's not ACOS.

I have seen a vocal minority express dislike for the song (which is understandable), and obviously there isn't a single DT song that every fan likes, but ACOS seems like it would be up there with how revered it is. It's been mentioned many times in this thread alone as a possible candidate, which I think lends it some credibility.

I would suggest someone start a poll for the topic, but I really wouldn't know how to tackle it.
