So my history teacher and I were talking about The Mars Volta and Rush and stuff, and a dude and I suggested that he should try to listen to Dream Theater for some heavier prog, since he's also into Metallica and stuff.

I was thinking of burning him Octavarium but slightly modified and fit to make room for maybe TGP or something along those lines. Where do you think is a good place to start? I have only about 6 songs from before SFAM, and I everything from then to now.

TL

I would definitely recommend Caught In A Web if you haven't included it already.

cramx3

Just give him Images and Words and since you don't seem to have it, you should get it too.

Hmm I definitely should pick it up, I have 4 of the heavy hitters off the album, but it looks like iTunes is missing Learning to Live  :-\

TL

I don't use iTunes, but from what a friend of mine told me, songs over 10 minutes are only available if you buy the whole album. If you're getting the whole thing, it shouldn't be a problem, but be sure to double check that you're getting it.
If not, there are probably other online music stores that would have it.

Fuzzboy

1.The Dark Eternal Night
2.The Dark Eternal Night
3.The Dark Eternal Night
4.The Dark Eternal Night

That should be enough.

But honestly, Images and Words, Awake, SFAM should all be good.

skydivingninja

Images and Words or Scenes From a Memory are fantastic starting albums.

ResultsMayVary

If your looking for more heavier songs since SFAM, i got a few on my mind:

The Glass Prison
As I Am
This Dying Soul
Honor Thy Father
The Root of All Evil
Panic Attack
Never Enough (?)
Constant Motion
The Dark Eternal Night
In The Presence of Enemies

Just a few suggestions...

Dcrupi

If he's a fan of Rush and Mars Volta, I'd recommend Images & Words.  Possibly Scenes From A Memory.  Your current plan isn't bad though, he would probably like Octavarium, and The Glass Prison is always a good choice.

Jamariquay

Images and Words
Scenes From A Memory
Awake

That basically covers it.

The Letter M

If he wants some heavy stuff, I would include the following:

As I Am (Greatest Hit Version)
The Dark Eternal Night
Home
Panic Attack
The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul
The Root of All Evil
Repentance

And if you want to make a second CD:
Honor Thy Father
Constant Motion
In The Presence of Enemies (Part 2)
In The Name of God
Octavarium

Those are some pretty good heavy hitters, IMO... and including the first four songs from the Twelve Step Suite might intice him to purchase the upcoming album (to finish hearing the suite).

I took into account that you only have complete albums from SFAM to SC... otherwise, I'd make a mix of songs from Images And Words and Awake...

Metropolis
Caught In A Web
Under A Glass Moon
Innocence Faded
Pull Me Under
Ytse Jam
The Mirror
Lie
A Change of Seasons (Gotta have that!)

For an 80 minute CD, I'd suggest this:

1. New Millennium
2. Scarred
3. The Mirror
4. Lie
5. The Glass Prison
6. Pull Me Under
7. Hell's Kitchen
8. Lines in the Sand
9. Wait for Sleep
10. Learning to Live

I had the same issue arise a few days ago.  A friend of mine wanted me to burn him a disc full of DT so he could check them out.  I ended up burning a DVD with all 9 albums.

On a somewhat unrelated note, it seems like everybody that I've introduced to DT lately has REALLY enjoyed Octavarium.

axeman90210

just give him Scenes From A Memory, if that doesn't hook him then recommend he has a professional check his ears

pinkclimax

I think Change of Seasons is a must for this CD.

It has everything.

Also, Metropolis Pt. 1, Spirit Carries On,  and Learning to Live (just download it from a torrent or youtube audio )

Then top off with As I Am and In the Name of God , if u have room, put hells kitchen in there

To me, thats a perfect disc.

I did an 80 min DT CD for a friend, tried to give an all-round impression of what DT do and ended up with

1. The Glass Prison
2. Caught In A Web
3. Ytse Jam
4. Hollow Years
5. Panic Attack
6. Home
7. In The Name Of God
8. Learning To Live

If someone just wanted to hear a bunch of their most accessible songs, the mix cd I'd make for him would look something like this:

1. Under A Glass Moon
2. Caught In A Web
3. Peruvian Skies
4. Fatal Tragedy
5. Solitary Shell
6. As I Am
7. These Walls
8. Forsaken
9. A Change Of Seasons (for shits and giggles)

Etheraven

I'd say...

1. The root of all evil
2. Blind faith
3. A mind beside itself (all three)
4. Just let me breathe
5. Pull me under
6. As I am
7. Surrounded
8. Afterlife
9. The ministry of lost souls

Dunno if they all fit though.

BRGM

I'd just say
entire Six degrees abum, Octalbum, and black clids and silver album

sounds like the old dude who showed up at my garage sale..and started rumaging through my cd's for sale...(I had a double of Awake in there)...he asked if I had any RUSH. I said...no..but if....you think Neil Peart is the greatest ever...perhaps you should listen to this...(hands him Awake)....who's Dream Theater he says......I said......just go listen in your car, if you aren't impressed I'll give you five other cds of your choice from the box.

He goes to car.
I hear Mikey fire up his little drum lesson at the beginning of  6:00
He comes back.
"do you have any more of that"

Give him Awake.

SFAM is a huge hit. When I was taking Abnormal Psychology I burned a CD with this on it and she absolutely loved it! Then again she studies this stuff for a living (teaches this stuff for a living). Its still a great starter album :)

edit: I'm retarded. I gave my Abnormal Psychology teacher Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I bet that makes much more sense. Sorry guys.
