Glad you guys dug it. I set it up with Classic Rock Magazine here in the UK a while back as part of their coverage around the album release (another piece being the current April 2016 issue's Story Behind The Song feature on Pull Me Under). We flew them out to the second Oslo show last weekend, so they could film it in the afternoon before the gig. (We didn't do it in London to let the guys have the day to concentrate on the show, given we had the very first two performances here). Think they did a splendid job! We did something else (also for Classic Rock) at the same time, so that's to come in due course too.   :tup

Awesome work, sir! These kinds of things are great.

Awesome work, Madam (because Kix is a girl - look at the gender). ;)

Oops. Sorry about that!

Quote from: hefdaddy42 on March 04, 2016, 08:39:49 AMMP was definitely the driving force behind doing covers, especially the full-album covers.

He was perhaps the main driving force, but was not the driving force.  JP was definitely a driving force as well.  Not sure about the other band members.

hefdaddy42

Pretty sure the concept was MP's and that MP picked the albums they covered.

Must be in a minority that wasn't a big fan. JP and JLB are fine, but Jordan overplays it.

Some time ago I found a Rudess cover of Steven Wilsons The Raven That Refused to Sing - and as much as I love the guy, all I could think was "Dude, stop, calm down". The great thing about the song was the fact that it's carried by those few notes, playing a million notes a second kills the whole thing. Kind of feel the same with this cover. Petrucci and LaBrie are great though.

For the cover albums, yes, I believe you are correct.  For cover songs, no, it was not just MP.

Being a Hugh Hefner that plays guitar? That's the dream.

In all seriousness, that's like overdoing his Budokan look (which I think was his best). And with the development of this conversation, DTF: being homo-erotic since 2007.

I remember that video, yeah. That was definitely over the top. Didn't think it was too bad with this one though.

I guess there might be different opinions among men just as there probably are among women.

Personally, I'd never dye my hair, or grow a beard/mustache, or sunglasses (not even at the beach), or wear piercings, so that style looks awful to me.

Except for the short hair - I think it looked good on John, and I think it usually looks good on everyone.

I loved it.

MP was definitely the driving force behind doing covers, especially the full-album covers.  I love this, because it is a cover that we get to see and hear, and it isn't a direct copy of the original, and it isn't taking up "DT concert time".

Yup, and I loved it too!
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I personally always loved the occasional cover thrown into the concert. It's the "here's a whole CD you can buy" approach that I felt was a bit much after a while.

I find the "Jordan overplays" comments painfully tiring. It's just a stylistic choice. If you don't like the way he plays, that's absolutely fine, but to suggest he "overplays" is just such a dull and irritating criticism.

If he toned it down when he didn't want to, he wouldn't be Jordan. That's the way he likes to play and wants play most of the time. Variety is the spice of life. If you don't like the style, stay away from Jordan (for most of the time)... it's simple really.

There's something about the word "overplay" that suggests he's doing it wrong. There is no right or wrong, there's just expression. If you prefer more subtle expression, that's totally legit, but don't get on your high horse and criticism someone for "overplaying".

Pray tell, how are people then supposed to indicate that they think Jordan plays too many notes?  With your argument, one must never not like a thing Jordan does, because if he didn't do it, it wouldn't be Jordan.

I see. There are really different opinions of course! To me it's the complete opposite: I always prefer long hair over short (both male and female), dyed hair can be really pretty/cool and a (not too huge) beard makes things so much better ;p

Ontopic: I like the cover. xD

The notion of "playing too many notes" is dumb, as is the notion of turning to a punk band and saying "you're not playing enough notes". You seem to have completely missed my point; I say it's totally fine/expectable/understandable for anyone not to like what Jordan's doing, my objection is with the concept of "playing too many notes"... I must presume you're either trolling me or are unable to read.

Maybe I'm just being pedantic though - if people said "I wish Jordan would be more subtle" is wouldn't bother me. But Jordan just isn't subtle is he? And that's his choice, it's not "right" or "wrong" like some people seem to make out.

Very nice!

12 string guitar? Can anyone tell how often JP uses that?

I agree too, I really love James voice on it, and John plays very neat but, not everything needs fast arpegios  :censored

Nice version! Jordan goes over the top with the arpeggios on some covers, but I don't mind his playing here.

Ben_Jamin

When JR plays alone or without drums, bass, any kind of backing. He tends to play more notes to fill up that space. Look at him playing Space Dye-Vest with James, then with the band. It's more subtle but he still adds his little flares.

Now a song like Raven I can see not needing those flares because well, its meant to be subtle. Steven even had to tell Guthrie he's only gonna play basically those three notes.

ReaperKK

Off topic but I think Steven had some great direction for Guthrie. Guthrie is a monster but when he restrained a bit you get some amazing solos, like the one in Drive Home.

But JR can play more subtly. We usually don't make note of it because it's....subtle. And a lot of us like it when he plays more subtly. It's all about context. If a song is written to be subtle, and then JR comes and gets rid of the subtlety because whatever reason he has, we have every right to make note of it.

It's not like JR wrote this song. He is literally adding notes to someone else's song. That's kind of the very definition of playing too many notes.

DarkLord_Lalinc

A great example of JR not overplaying anything is The Astonishing. I can't imagine it gets any better than that.

RaasMah

Love the cover and love JR playing. I agree its a matter of taste, if he would have played less notes I would probably said "this is nice, but idd wish JR would add a bit more to it"

1neeto

Only if Jordan cooled it with his keyboard wankery it would've been one of their best covers ever. JP impressed me with his high harmonies, and JLB tried to emulate Gilmour and did a decent job at it. He kept looking at what seemed like a lyric cheat sheet though wtf!

Oh come on. The dude currently has to remember every lyric to The Astonishing. It's okay to not remember the lyrics to a one-off cover.

ReaperKK

Not a big deal if JLB has to look at a lyric sheet. Not everyone knows the song word for word.
