Come to N.H. bosk1.  Bacon, pancakes,  eggs, hashbrowns and toast await you.

I recall no pancakes, eggs, or hash browns.

Or toast.

I also like pancakes, punctuation and parentheses (and e-signing).

I'm pretty sure (at this point), I am the "Yngwie J. Malmsteen" of punctuation and parentheses; however, in my defense, I find it irritating - sometimes maddening - when people write like they speak.

Wouldn't surprise me if I've posted about this before, but it annoys the heck out of me when paper towel and napkin holders are stuffed so full it's impossible to pull out a napkin or towel without ripping it apart.  This is especially annoying with restroom paper towels, which you're typically grabbing with wet hands that make the towel even more susceptible to tearing.  With napkin holders, I typically dig in and pull out about 25 napkins and leave those that I don't use on top.

The dudes who clean and restock my office (Janitors... but they really suck and don't even deserve that title), tend to stuff our paper towel dispenser so full that they're almost impossible to get out. But then they will forget to restock it some weeks (they only come once a week) and we wind up going from way too full to having none until I complain.

I don't even know the reason but I got a free coffee so I'm fine I guess. :lol Pretty tired though. Settled in Amsterdam now, this AirBNB has a nice ginger cat (a bit on a chonky side) and he apparently likes me so it's alright. His name is apparently Thijs and I don't know how to pronounce that so his name is "hey buddy" now.

Didn't know who the fuck Sam Smith is until I googled him.  I know this prick now, he sings wimpy ass fucking shit and sounds like a fucking little bitch.  After reading the article a little bit, fuck off mate.  Do you have a dick?  If you do, you are a guy, if you don't, then you may be female.  I guess he's confused he looks kinda male but sounds like a chick.

Something I find annoying here in North Carolina. Everything if fucking closed on Sunday, care dealerships, vet offices, some restaurants, liquor stores. This was something that really jumped out at me when I first moved here, coming from Florida everything is open 7 days a week.

Also to piggy back a little off that, blue laws are insanely stupid. In the past two years they finally allowed people to drink before noon on Sunday's at restaurants, now the time is 10am but I remember when I first moved here a few restaurants I'd visit have a big countdown clock until you can order a bloody mary.

It's funny; I'm with you on most of this (though I know who Ryan Tedder is, and you do to if I played you the right songs).  But the part that gets me most you didn't mention:   the fact that "celebrities" social media messages are now considered a meaningful part of "news".   And how the messages themselves are "selected" so as to implicitly characterize some as "valuable" and some as not.  I'm going to bet a round of beers that all seven messages were exceedingly positive and supportive in every way.  I'm pretty sure if a celebrity with good intent and in a well-meaning, caring way posted "Hey Sam; with you so much here, but given your past struggles with coming to grips with your feelings, I'm hoping that you can find some solace in therapy and reach a steady inner peace." it would be rejected as "hate" or something similar.  EDIT:  Checked the slide deck and sure enough...  EDIT2: His wikipedia page has been completely scrubbed and all references to "him" are now "they".  Makes it... different and slightly difficult to read.

I honestly couldn't care less what Sam Smith calls himself or wants others to call him (and was I to ever meet him, I would respect his wishes as one human being to another).  But why do the OPINIONS of others qualify as news?  Are we supposed to now tailor our response to "Demi Lovato" (a self-admittedly troubled girl struggling with identity issues of her own)?  Don't we rail against this in the P/R thread?

What I like about the MSN page is that the news casts a wide net, so I'm cool with that. There's also "celebrity" and Entertainment headlines, and I really don't have an issue with that either. But who are these people?
There's a daily Kardashian/Jenner story too, and I'm thinking who actually fucking cares about these people. How are they even famous, and what do they do for anybody?

My wife and I have a running joke; we watch shows like "America's Worst Cooks" and "Chopped" on Food Network, and shows like "Family Feud" and when they have "celebrity" editions I invariably ask "when do the celebrities come on?"  It's a low bar these days.  At least the old-school celebrities that made the game show circuit - the Brett Somers', the Charles Nelson Reilly's, the Bert Convy's - they had legitimate careers, albeit outside of television.   Now? Not so much.

Is there a line?  Are "treating everyone with respect", and "following standard language" mutually exclusive?
And lets be honest....does anyone really "follow standard language" these days?

We should treat everyone with respect, and simply address them the way they wish.  We do it all the time with names, nicknames, and titles....it isn't much different with gender pronouns.  We all don't meet SO many people with specific requests in how to refer to them gender wise that it really becomes any issue.  I just can't understand what the big deal is.  Just address them the way they request.  Simple courtesy and really no big deal.

Nothing against you personally.....just my take on it.

Cool Chris

I try to. Words have meaning. I don't just discard language because it doesn't align with what someone wants it to mean. Conversely, I understand language evolves and is not chiseled in stone.

Do we need to call Rachel Dolezal black because she wants us to? Do we need to call Emile Ratelband* a 49 year old, because he wants us to? Don't things like "black" and "69 years old" have objective meaning?

Don't get me started! I feel like an grumpy old man when even thinking about that and it irritates me more than mildly (and more than it should). Everyone these days must be super pc because most people on the internet are privileged whiny bitches. I always think if these people (Sam Smith for example, and I like some of his music and think he's great singer) had real problems they wouldn't have time to even think about being non-binary or whatever. I think that's private thing and if think you're jet aeroplane so be it. But you can't expect everyone to let you be that just because you want it. Maybe he thinks he's hated or something because some troll online offended him. And that's what trolls do to anyone who is popular.
I'm all in for free speech and USA has that covered afaik but I heard some other countries have punishment for calling someone the wrong pronoun (Canada, UK?). Like what the fuck? If someone calls you something you don't like just don't communicate with them.

Stadler

But that's the thing, though.   We've blurred the difference between an "ask" and a "demand".   You can't DEMAND respect, you can only earn it or ask for it.  It does not have to be granted.

Yet, in today's society, if you don't grant it, it's damning.  So effectively, you have this put out there and it's NOT an "ask" anymore.  As soon as we get into the realm of not honoring the wishes - which happens for 100 different reasons - it's labelled "hate" and now there's a value judgment attached. Not calling Sam Smith "him" now is NOT the same thing as not calling Stefani Germanotta "Lady Gaga" or Paul Frehley "Ace".
