I need a sludge/post-metal pal on this forum!! Any takers?

Errrrr.... :metal

Save it all for Tomi's roulette, it should go down better there.
Quote from: ariich on November 07, 2023, 12:38:53 PMJust popping in to say Luke, you were right.

Crow

i really don't think tomi would like saver or conjurer or the like either, based on what i know of his tastes, but sure  :P

Train of Naught

Sâver probably not.. Conjurer is incredibly different but I also think that's risky. Anyway I don't feel like playing in roulettes for now, maybe later this year again!

East of the Wall is very inconsistent, but The Apologist is amazing. The Ocean are on a roll and in my opinion have the strongest line-up they've had so far! Panopticon, Galilean Satellites and Somewhere Along the Highway are all good but all of those bands have better albums :corn :corn

@Lethean there are three songs over 10 minutes, though Second Life Syndrome is the longest by a good bit. there's also a 9 minute song too, I think

Yeah, Machine Messiah and East of the Wall 3-for-1 are over 10 minutes, Roundabout and The Edge of Forever almost nine and Dissolve to Ashes close to eight minutes. Overall 85 minutes of music.

I can make the Spotify playlists public if anyone's interested.

Results coming tomorrow. This is probably the closest and most consistently good round yet, even the songs that'll score low are good.

Crow

I swear that saver song was like 6 minutes long lol

ROUND 6 RESULTS

10 points: TAC
Hibria – High Speed Breakout

Some riffy goodness. The bass is a bit low on the mix, but when it's unleashed hot damn!

You know I said I'm not too keen on power metal. Apparently cheese and general over-the-toppiness is what I'm looking for. It's almost silly how epic this song wants to be and it even succeeds. Damn it if this doesn't make you want to bang your fist and shout. And that bass... it's absolutely phenomenal on the second half of the song. A song that lives up to its name.

9 points: Stadler
Yes - Tempus Fugit

Fun, up-tempo song with some amazing riffs.

Dare I say it... this sounds a lot like Rush from the same time period. That's only a good thing though. The bass is largely the lead instrument here. All three Yes songs I got are rockers and suffice to say I like this side of the band.

8 points: Train of Naught
Sâver – Dissolve to Ashes

That keyboard sound is quite annoying. There are some good riffs, but this genre isn't probably my thing.

This one's a grower. That bass sound is gargantuan and I like how crisp the drums sound. The bottom end gets a little muddy when the guitar is playing the chords and I would've liked the growls to be bit louder, but this is a tidal wave of distortion that steamrollers over you.

7 points: Kattelox
Yes – Roundabout

That's one seriously good bass tone. And a bass line. This is pretty awesome.

Seriously man, why don't you like this  :-[. Crazy good groove and that bass tone is really one of the best I've ever heard. Bridge has fun Latin American-style percussion. This would've been great on round 2, especially since my home town has a ton of roundabouts.

East of the Wall – Naif/Linear Failure/My Favorite Society Guy

This combines plenty of things I like.

Personally, I don't really consider these three a single song. Naif is a short intro track akin to Mirrors by Between the Buried and Me and would feel incomplete without Linear Failure. The first two songs are very intense, although there's a lovely clean guitar solo midway through Linear Failure which takes the foot off the gas for a minute. My Favorite Society Guy is more laid-back instrumental and it's fine but instrumental music needs to be very good to keep me interested. While I like their brand of progressive post-hardcore, there's no really memorable hooks. Still, this is something I'd like to hear more.

5-1 points: Sacul
Have a Nice Life – Bloodhail

I'm liking the mood on this one.

I saw post-punk listed as one of their genres and this actually reminds a little of Bauhaus. While it is quite repetitive, I like its solemnity and steady electronic beat.

4 points: Puppies_On_Acid
Yes - Machine Messiah

This is heavier what I'd expected from them.

That main riff could as well be Black Sabbath. Still, a lot of this is in major key. An uptempo rocker, with slower acoustic choruses which is an interesting touch. There's always something interesting going on, although the vocals are a bit out-of-key at times. 7:50 is especially cringeworthy. This isn't as far removed from the other Yes songs as the standings indicate, the competition just happens to be very tough.

Cigarettes After Sex – K.

Nice and atmospheric. I thought I wouldn't like the vocalist, but his singing style fits this kind of music.

Music for a dark rainy night. I dunno, it's good but I guess I should be in a certain mood to really enjoy this. Basically another casualty of a very good round.

2 points: MoraWintersoul
Symphony X – The Edge of Forever

All those time and key changes... I know these guys can play but this is not very cohesive effort.

I guess it shows here once again that I'm not the biggest prog guy around here. This has many great moments but there's some... interesting songwriting choices, like having a solo section after the first verse. The full chorus also appears pretty late to the song, although it's riff is introduced earlier. Actually, if the song had begun at 3:30, I'd probably liked it more.

1 point: Lethean
Riverside – Second Life Syndrome

Sending something this long was a risky move and I'm afraid it didn't pay out.

The biggest reason why this one came last is that it's loooooong. Eleven minutes would have probably been enough. It takes too long for this to get going and the outro goes on for too long too. However, I really like the chorus. Secret Exhibition is easily the best movement of the song. Does anyone have lyrics for Vicious Ritual, every lyrics site said it's instrumental?

Round 7 theme:

MACHINES HAVE NO CONSCIENCE

I've had a lot of different genres of music during this roulette. Classic prog, indie, folk, power metal, post-hardcore, post-metal, acoustic progressive post-hardcore (seriously wth Zinnschauer is  :lol)... But being a metal music forum, most of them have at least guitar, piano or acoustic percussion. I want to shake things up a little bit, so send me something electronic.

Once again, the theme is quite lax. All instrumentation does not need to be electronic. But it can't be like e.g. Outcry, where there's a minute of electronic beat in an 11 minute song either.

strongly disagree that there are no hooks in the EOTW song but most of them are in the guitar and bass lines, not so much the vocals
anyways ready to underperform again! i actually dunno what to send for this as I used up a lot of my electronic stuff already on previous rounds  :lol

I sort of knew this round might be a bit difficult for you. :lol This was just something I wanted to do for I love some artists that are electronic to some degree, in fact Nine Inch Nails and Ministry are both top 5 bands for me. I also had similar round on my first roulette.

I'm sure you'll find something. I like synthpop if that helps.

Train of Naught

I also wish the vocals were a bit higher in the mix! Like in my PM, the legends of Breach a.k.a. one of the founding fathers of the 90's hardcore scene had the mix down a bit better, but it's also more straight up hardcore which may be less appealing, I think the plodding atmosphere in Dissolve to Ashes is what makes it so great.

Not sure what you're thinking of, but I sent a song I've never sent (by an artist I've sent before).

Stadler

I may not win the round, or even do passably well, but I think I was creative, and actually sent a song I both own and LOVE.

               Gary Numan, "Cars"

Trying for gold on the third try!  :)

Ruba

Third one's fine. :tup

I like Butthole Surfers a lot, although I prefer their 80s output, when they were doing LSD by a truckload. Their 90s material is more standard fare alternative/hard rock, albeit still pretty good and with glimpses of their earlier weirdness.

Gary Numan I probably should've banned, I've heard his debut album. He was definitely ahead of his time.
