It is a great album, although I haven't played it in a while if I recall track 4 was a fave.
But I honestly can't compare JP solo with Vai or Satriani....maybe when he releases his next one.  :)

I love instrumental guitar records but I think this one is overrated.

My favorites are:

- Greg Howe: Instropection
- Tony Macalpine: Edge of insanity / Maximun security / Freedom to fly / Madness
- Vinnie Moore: Mind's eye / Time odyssey (Jordan here)
- Joe Satriani: Surfing with the alien / Flying in a blue dream
- Jason Becker: Perpetual burn

Most of Marty Friedman / Bozzio - Levin - Stevens / Derek Sherinian

Some Blues Saraceno / Steve Vai

And instrumental bands: 7 for 4 / LTE / Planet X

Also like Kansas' violinist David Ragsdale's "David & Goliath" record, Return to Forever's "Romantic warrior" and Vitalij Kuprij rock albums

I'm not discussing the greatness of this album because it kicks ass but how is it a guitar album? I don't understand that part.
How is it not?
It has the guitar as the leading instrument, doesn't it?

It never struck me as an album that was really guitar oriented. We probably have different conceptions of what a guitar album is.

What? The whole album is essentially a backing track with JP playing over it. In what way is it anything but a "guitar album"?

xeper

I don't play guitar but I enjoyed this CD, although it doesn't get as much repeat listening as the DT catalog. I often wonder how JP decided which riffs would/n't work for DT songs.

Bill Carson

It's a very good first instrumental CD but sorry....it doesn't come close to some of Vai's and Satriani's earlier work.
e.g Vai's Passion & Warfare......genius !
And you know what...I think JPX would be the first to admit that.

Yeah, if I hear a great riff or solo I would always think "I wish he had out that on the DT album".

I am not talking about JP's album. I was talking about Gordian Knot's first album

I been listening to a lot of Pink Floyd lately (Thanks to Roger Waters' The Wall show in Helsinki) and I just realized that the name of the album might come from Pink Floyd's song Learning to Fly...

"Learning To Fly"

Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
A fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted, just an earth-bound misfit, I

Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought, I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
A soul in tension -- that's learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try

Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
A dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss

Can't keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Adami

Suspended Animation is also a very common phrase.

I noticed that too... but yeah, Petrucci is a MASSIVE Pink Floyd fan so I'm not really surprised

I just wanted too share this video with Dave Dicenso who's the drummer on Suspended Animation. I've never really known about him but this old 90s video of him shredding with his band is just insane. The music is what it is but his playing is just from another planet, been a while since i've been this floored by a drummer actually.

Also don't miss the Mike Mangini cameo at the end.  :lol

Lonk

That video should be posted on the "CLICK OR..." thread lol

And MM's face at the end is priceless lol

Does anyone know why DD never toured with JP?  Why would JP pick him for the album and then not take him on tour?

MrBoom_shack-a-lack

Well correct me if i'm wrong but he never toured with the SA album, he only did the G3 tours where he played a couple of songs from the album and I guess it was convinient to use MP although Dave LaRue was there. I'm not sure, maybe DD declined because of his work at Berklee.

IIRC it came down to JP wanting to separate his solo album from DT. Had MP appeared on the album, then fans might connect it to DT in the same way that they have done so with LTE and (at least for me) the live album he and JR did together. But he was happy having MP play live, so that continued.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
