I've heard one C&C in my life and only heard it once.  Might take Ruslans approach as I don't want to listen to them at all lol.

About 15 years ago, I worked with a kid that knew I was a big Maiden fan. He brought in a CD and told me I'd love it. It sounded intriguing, but I couldn't get past the vocals. Really strange sound.

I agree with that person that Coheed has some significance Maiden influence. But I can't argue with the fact that Claudio Sanchez has a Geddy-Lee-tier weird voice. I suspect it's an "either it works for you or it doesn't" thing and nothing we send will change your mind, but maybe 15 years has changed things.

At about the same time, I also worked with another kid that knew I was a DT fan and he made me a copy of Deadwing and Ghost Reveries. That's how I know those albums.

When I saw C and C about 10 years ago, they played a cover of The Trooper. It rocked pretty good.

Lonk

Of all the bands in this roulette, C&C and mastodon are the ones I know the most (both in top 5 bands for me). I'm honestly struggling to think of what to send because I want to make sure Tim likes the songs, and that's going to be hard  :lol

Interesting. So do you know those albums pretty well? That, in my opinion, would make both those artists really tough nuts to crack, because those strike me as the albums from each of them that would be most likely to appeal to you.

ProfessorPeart

I have to admit, I find it strange when people that love 70's era Rush rag on Claudio's voice.

For me, it was nothing because he reminded me of early Ged.

I find it a little strange, but not totally crazy. I find their voices similar, but not the same. Personally I like most of what Claudio does, but I merely tolerate early Geddy (I think he takes a significant step forward on A Farewell to Kings and then another significant step forward on Permanent Waves).

I'm a Rush fan who tolerates more than loves Geddy's 70s vocal style. My memory of C and C was that his voice sounded artificial in some way.

So I do know Ghost Reveries pretty well. That album did stick with me, but the band did not. I listened to their follow up once and couldn't tell you the first thing about it. And I have heard Heritage a few times.

I don't like Michael Akerfeldt. As much as I don't care for his harsh vocals, his cleans are worse. That is my memory, so we'll see if anything has changed.

As far as Deadwing goes, I remember liking Arriving Somewhere and The Start of something Beautiful, though I've heard neither in a dozen years.  I don't remember like very much of it at all. But again, we're talking 12-15 years ago.

Regarding Coheed's vocals, it's similar to the band 3, Joey Eppard sounds like Claudio's brother. Though fun fact I guess Joey's brother played/plays drums for Coheed.

there is really very, very little metalcore left in them if at all. the type of harsh vocals giles does and that's probably about it. death metal is definitely closer to accurate but in many ways they're practically just a prog metal band that has some harsh vocals at this point

I'm kind of with Tim in regards to Arkerfeldts clean vox.  I never quite understood the praise they get.  I don't really have a big issue with them, but I've always felt he's pretty plain with his clean vocals.

It feels like it's fairly common with most harsh vocalists, no? Looking at Mastodon as well.

The cleans that I've heard so far in this round aren't actually that bad.
