Cyril sent the best song and I didn't send it, though I almost did, because I don't think TAC would like it.
I sent it because pre-pop PT seems like the way to go to me. What I suspect turned him off of blackest eyes (and maybe PT in general) is the very 90's pop rock verses and chorus and that sound is prevalent all over pretty much every PT album from stupid dream onward. Certainly not on every song but it's absolutely a defining aspect of it (and SW from HCE onwards too, tbh)

I'll be totally honest I almost sent Raven in place of Luminol too but I didn't want two slow tracks. I don't think I've listened to Luminol in years but it's a pretty obvious pick so whatever lol

King Postwhore

Drive home was another I thought hard about. That solo itself is worth it.
"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'." - Bon Newhart.

Revenge319

My choices probably would've been Octane Twisted along with either The Blind House, The Incident, or Time Flies (nice to see Time Flies was sent, though!). If I picked something from Disc 2 from The Incident, I probably would've gone with Remember Me Lover rather than Bonnie the Cat. Some non-TI choices I would've made might include Prodigal, .3, or maybe even Four Chords That Made A Million. And if I were to send a Steven Wilson song, it'd be either Home Invasion or Drive Home.

Puppies_On_Acid

A few thoughts on the songs that were sent.

- I can't believe I forgot about So Called Friend. That is a great song!
- I'm not surprised Anesthetize got sent four times, despite Cyril thinking it's the worst song on the album.
- I'm a little worried that no one else sent live tracks. In my opinion, Porcupine Tree shines more in a live environment. Sometimes their studio albums can be a little.....too pristine.
- I almost sent Dark Matter, glad that Cyril sent it. Good song.
- Dislocated Day is another song I strongly considered, but ultimately decided against. I do think Tim will like it though.
- Also, I wavered back and forth over sending the live version of Anesthetize and Way Out of Here for way longer than I care to admit.
- Perhaps the strangest song that was sent is Gravity Eyelids. I don't think that will be Tim's jam at all, but who knows. :corn

ftr my first submission of PT/SW was Blackest Eyes and Home Invasion/Regret #9 (they're tracked together on spotify so)
this probably would not have gone over well  :lol

Elite

For what it's worth, I love Gravity Eyelids and I understand why someone would send it. I almost went with luve tracks from the Coma Divine album too, bit ultimately decided against it, because some of that is a little rough around the edges, which I personally enjoy a lot, but I think that live album is better as a whole than when you'd take tracks off it.

And Cyril, you nailed it for me why I went with older PT, aside from my general own enjoyment of those albums. I figured that would be the way to go for this roulette.

So while I already have the studio version sent, why not send me an additional 17 minute live version??  :lol

Romdrums
So Called Friend
Sever

Elite
Dislocated Day
Synesthesia

These are some bizarre-ass choices.
Synesthesia and Sever are fine I guess but Dislocated Day is one of my least-favorite PT songs, I find it just plain obnoxious.

Re-listening to So Called Friend for the first time in forever and holy fuck I forgot how much of a Tool ripoff this song is. :lol

King Postwhore

Romdrums going after the heavy PT thinking it is what Tim likes. Not rocket science.

Crow

yeah relistening to it i think TAC's not gonna be wild about the middle third of luminol but the first and last thirds seem like a sure hit to me
this song's pretty good, probably one of the best SW solo songs tbh

I think it's the heavy moments but I'm with you. Tim is a very peculiar duck when it comes to music.

Yeah, one interesting part of this roulette has been TAC's comparisons to other artists. It seems like every round he makes a comparison that I've never read before and would never have thought of on my own, but that makes sense when I think about it.

Thanks, 425!

Surprised I was the only one to send "Fear of a blank planet", we'll see how it does  :corn

TAC

OK, I've been through the playlist once.

Overall general First Impressions..

-The Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd influences are huge.
-The lead guitar playing is excellent. Such a wonderful tone.
-Some of the lyrics I picked up are kind of cringey.
-Steven Wilson's vocals are really awful in spots. They feel so patronizing. He definitely suffers from The Guy Who Thinks He's The Smartest Guy In The Room Syndrome.
-There are a couple of songs where I think "Why would anyone send this to me?".
-For those that sent Anesthetize...the final section drags the song down.

I guess Russia On Fire is the sequel to Russia On Ice?  :lol

I originally had Futile and swapped it for Russia. I had a feeling he would ding the latter end of Anesthetize. Not really surprised. Figured he'd enjoy Lifeson's solo.

Truthfully, The Sound of Muzak's lyrics are pretty bad. Also, the bolded part is not wrong!

Definitely two complaints I understand and share to some degree.

I think Wilson has occasional moments of lyrical cleverness, but a lot of parts that I find odd and some that I find really off-putting. Part of the reason Deadwing and The Raven That Refused to Sing are easily my two favorite Wilson albums is that the lyrics on the former are mostly inscrutable and the lyrics on the latter are much better than Wilson's average. Meanwhile, I think In Absentia and FoaBP are really good musically, but so off-putting lyrically as to drag my enjoyment of them way down.

I think his vocals are best when he's doing the sort of laid-back Floydian thing or the plaintive thing. When he tries to bring an edge or attitude, it doesn't work. Lazarus, yes. Fear of a Blank Planet, no.

I think it's better to send songs I like than to send songs I think might be in line with Tim's taste.

That's why I sent Gravity Eyelids because I think it's one of PTs best.
