Big Wreck appears to be back together and releasing a new album called Albatross.  New single alread out.
I saw them open for DT at a bar in South Florida with like a few hundred people....on FII tour.  First time seeing DT....amazing to see them in a bar!
Big Wreck was amazing...HUGE fan.  The singer Ian Thornley is great, and released a couple solo albums.

Anyone a fan?

Decent band, but not my cup of tea.  I saw them in a small bar in the mid 90's.  What was interesting was the opening band for them- nickelback.  Really really not my cup of tea.

I quite enjoyed the new album.

Bumping this thread...

I'm a huge Big Wreck fan, these guys are killer!  Their latest album "Albatross" is fantastic, beautiful song writing, the guitar layering is great, amazing vocals, etc...

Ian Thornley, their singer and main guitarist is absolutely jaw-dropping, I think DTF will enjoy this tasty video (also note the JP Music Man Guitar):

Bumping this again, Big Wreck's got a new album coming out soon!

The album is called "Ghosts" and will be released on June 10th for Canada and July 15th for the US.

The first single from the album is the title track "Ghosts" and the official music video can be found here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pghhg40gTs4

Additionally, the entire album is available to be streamed worldwide through several official sources approved by the band. One of the sources can be found on CBC Music here:

I've listened to the album about two times all the way through and I have to say I'm loving it! Great mixture of rock, some progressive elements, great guitar layering and the bass and drum rhythm section is stellar on this record!

I'm bumping this thread in light after listening to their Ghosts album on Spotify a few weeks back.  I rarely heard of anything from them, prior to this listen, but a couple of people in the Alter Bridge Nation forums liked this album a lot and convinced me enough to take a listen to it.  It was well worth it.  It's a great interesting mixture of sounds like mikeyd stated.

Favorite songs from it: Ghosts, Hey Mama, My Life, Diamonds, and Still Here.

King Postwhore

Damn I like this single a lot.  I'll listen to the whole album.
"I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means 'put down'." - Bon Newhart.

On first listen I prefer Albatross (the album before this one) much more but I'll spin this one more I'm sure. I'm definitely a fan of Ian Thornley and the band.

mikeyd23

I've had Ghosts for a couple weeks now and I have to say its absolutely killer! The song writing is top notch and the performances from each member are great!

Standout tracks:
I Digress
Hey Mama
Friends
Break
Diamonds
War Baby

But honestly, there isn't a bad song on the album. Each song seems to balance being carefully crafted with the proper amount of raw emotion.

Big Bump

Big Wreck's new album Grace Street came out today. I've listened to it once through, it's pretty cool. Overall, seems a little more stripped back and chill, but it's still got a couple rockers that really dig into the groove.

Kinda poppy single:

Very Zep-like song that I love:

Long instrumental, kinda jazzy in spots:

they just covered their Canadian forefathers Rush with "Closer to the Heart"

odd arrangement.

Anguyen92

^^ Odd arrangement, yes.  However, I would prefer it if they put their own spin to it rather than replicate it note by note which is just not going to work well in comparison to the original so this cover works well for me much better than say DT's cover of Xanadu.

mikeyd23

I really liked that cover. They definitely put their own stamp on it. Good stuff.

That was awesome!  I could definitely hear some Trevor Rabin influence in his shredding techniques. Thanks for posting that link.  :tup

A friend of mine messaged that to me very early this morning. Very sad.

North American Tour (including St.Paul, MN on October 9th).

I haven't seen them since 1997 when they opened for Dream Theater at First Avenue.

I wonder who they have on guitar to replace Brian?

All right, I'll go to the LA show.  Should be ok in terms of attendance.  600 people.  Should be easy to accomplish.  They came and did two shows in SoCal to celebrate In Loving Memory Of... last year and the OC show did not do so hot (300 people capacity and only 200 people came).  Having another band play in the larger room in the same place did not help at all as well.  However, I'm sure the LA show (which was at the Roxy) did fine and I'm sure this show will do fine since it's the only show in SoCal and it's for a new album.  I hope the sound will be better in comparison to last year's show in the OC.  I couldn't hear much from Ian's guitar playing or vocals.

new album "But for the Sun" released tomorrow, August 30th.

among others I'm sure, the album is streaming on their YouTube page

The new record is KILLER.

Seriously awesome stuff!

LOVE Big Wreck, ever since I saw them open for Dream Theater on FII tour in a small club in FL.
Sad about founding member/guitar player dying.  Big Wreck is essentially a 3 piece now.
Damn Ian Thornley is the soul of that band.  Amazing guitar work, vocals, and songwriting.
His solo album is my go-to music for chilling in the pool.
May be my favorite band.

Anguyen92

Well, this was brought to my attention.  Big Wreck had a new song out last month.  They had Chad Kroeger of Nickelback sing the second verse on it.  There is actually some history between Big Wreck and Chad Kroeger as Kroeger signed Ian Thornley's solo act, Thornley, to his record label when Big Wreck had a pause in the 00s.  This song is all right.  Kinda takes me back to the 00s period.

Big Wreck released new song "Bombs Away" today. This band (and Ian Thornley) is just a hidden gem in music over the last 25+ years. Ian seems to always find a way to write interesting music that lends itself to a great melody.  :metal
