Pretty good! MP is definitely putting his own spin on the drum parts, but for me, he captures the gist of it and it works OK.

Sssshhh, the lot of you.

The Glass Prison is one of DT's best songs.

There

It's a technically impressive song, to be sure! Just doesn't connect with me, emotionally. But, I'm glad it does with you; that's awesome :)

The neat thing about DT, is that there are so many flavors to choose from. There is something for everyone!

Quote from: Tyrannosaurus Chicken on November 03, 2024, 06:49:24 AMIt's got one of the hardest guitar parts ever in it, according to JP. That arpeggio section in the intro is very tough, and I've never seen him nail it live. On the record, he alternate picked it, but live would often have to switch to sweep picking, due to MP pushing the tempo. At any rate, it's not nearly as popular as you think. Personally, it's a "skip" track for me, and my least favorite off Six Degrees.
Huh....This is the song that introduced me to DT. I don't think I would have done a discography deep dive if that song hadn't blown me away the first time I heard it.

Yeah, The Glass Prison is not my preferred blend of DT. Some cool ideas but overall an unpleasant listen for me.

The Glass Prison blew me away too when I first heard it, but I feel like for me, it might be my worst aging song in their catalog from where I felt about it when it came out to how I feel about it now.

Opposite for me, it was too much for my young brain at the time to appreciate, I liked straightforward stuff like Misunderstood, As I Am, and The Spirit Carries On, but as I started to like more proggy stuff, TGP clicked with me and it's a top 5 DT song now.

But I would classify TGP as more straightforward than proggy.

I don't know. Proggy I guess. ;D

I consider 8V proggy. I consider TGP long and it's like 10 minutes at one speed. The guys in the band consider it hard to play, not because of any intricacies, but because of the stamina to go 100 mph for that long.

1. Heavy as fuck. Also, much more modern sounding and in-line with popular metal acts of the time (the "nu-" variety) than anything they had done up to that point, which they then really leaned into on the follow-up album.
2. Personal/confessional lyrical subject matter that deeply resonates with many listeners affected by addiction, whether it's directly themselves or someone they are close with.

As I said earlier, the great thing about DT is, they cover so many styles, there's just about something for everyone. Did you get the PM I sent you? I was wondering if Barstool Warrior is your favorite DT song. I figured it might be, since it's your username.

This - I feel like there are a few great songs there, but I find the concept corny and hard to get past.

Agreed. There are a few great songs as you say, but I never have felt there were any stunners on that record. There are also too many songs that are cheesy or just alright. I get that it saved the band's career but if you listen to it straight through, it's easy to come to the conclusion it's not even in the same ball park as I&W.

Rico - I am pleased to see you are using your new account in a different manner from before. Happy to engage in real discussion when you leave the F yous at home.

In regards to your question, I don't have a particular favorite. It's one of the few albums that I feel is stellar from the first minute to the last.

I feel TGP might be a good song for James too.  He could change a lot and do a lot of different things with the melodies and deliveries and because it's quite heavy, he'd get away with a lot more.  A lot more lower stuff too.

My name is Dave, not Rico. I know you've been suspicious of me (hence your interrogation asking where I worked and what I do for a living) ever since I signed up, however at this point it's starting to get old. If you don't stop with this, I'm going to report you to one of the moderators for harassment. I would kindly like to remind you that, just because I signed up and got an account during a time you guys were experiencing trolls, does NOT mean I am one of those trolls! Seriously, enough already. I really don't know what else to say at this point - I'm sorry you feel the way you do about me. Have a pleasant rest of your day.

Why is jumping on the crappy nu-metal trend a plus? To me it's a huge minus and below them.

wolfking

I don't remotely here anything nu-metal in TGP.  I'm guessing though we're referring to that breakdown riff in the middle (the one repeated in TDS, riff goes C to B)?

EPIC Outro

Scenes From a Memory changed my life. When I first heard The Glass Prison, it sounded like DT had totally abandoned everything I resonated with in Scenes and I didn't like it at all. My musical tastes had a lot of growing to do at the time, and now I love TGP and I've embraced all sides of DT's musical personality. I was lucky to see TGP live once upon a time and it was fantastic. I look forward to seeing them play it again some day.

Scenes From A Memory changed a lot of people's lives, absolutely. There's definitely a reason why the majority of the fanbase cite that album as their favorite. I can concede the lyrics and overall story may be a tad cheesy, but compositionally, it's brilliant.

YngVai

Honestly, seeing anything other than complete adoration for TGP is surprising to me. It was one of the mp3s most commonly passed around my clique when we were being first in the mid 2000s.

Maybe it's a factor of when I got into DT, but I always thought it was considered one of the canonical indispensable tracks.

Funniness aside, I don't think The Chicken is Uncle Rico in disguise. And his posts are pretty good. Although, hmm... they did become fans of the band around the same time if memory serves correctly. Perhaps we are all Uncle Rico.

Another emotional night for Mike as he had to play a show missing the service for his sister... on his FB page you can see holding the sign for Samantha a fan in the front row passed on to them.

Mad respect for him for not cancelling any show to fly back.

MP really showing what it means for him being back in this band.

Agreed. He always was compassionate towards the fans, making sure the show goes on no matter what, and here he is demonstrating that more than ever.
