I could be showing my age as well, but I've struggled to find enjoyment in the large groups on other platforms.

Just imagine if you sounded as old as I am!   :lol
Feelin' kinda spooky.

I agree with all this. My "STFU" in (b) was supposed to have been tempered by my comment that places like this are helpful and healthy to interact.  I'm with those that think the FB and Discord (and to a lesser extent, Reddit) places are useless.  It doesn't seem to me to be friends shooting the shit, it seems to be a contest of sorts.  And while I get it, we're sort of "uber" fans here, and I know I take it to a different level sometimes in terms of what I know about a band, it never ceases to amaze me how STUPID some of these fans really are (and I'm accounting for the AI posts that purposefully get information wrong in order to spur on responses and comments).  I mean, can you REALLY call yourself a "Dream Theater fan" if you don't know basic band history or basic components of the discography?  At this point in their career, is it acceptable to think that "Images And Words" is their first album?  I think not.

Stads, I agree with the quoted. But that said, remember, while a lot of us sit here on message boards, Dream Theater does have a lot of fans who seriously only remember "songs" including the singles from the 90s and what they hear while driving on Sirius XM and the like. The knowledge of some of those fans is limited (for whatever reason) but they still probably consider themselves "big fans" even if they don't (for whatever reason) get overly familiar with the ins and outs of the discography.

I hear shit like this in lines at concerts all the time - people saying they are huge fans, but then say idiotic things that show that the don't know the band all that well. BUT...they still love the band regardless. To us, those who choose to post on a message board and really dive into a band, they may not seem like a "fan," but they really are. We're just...ahead of the curve.

I think you can be a fan and only know Pull Me Under. I think you can be a fan and not really know much about them but still attend a show and enjoy it.  There's lots of different levels of fandom, and there is likely a deeper level that leads you to a forum, and a much deeper and maybe sadder level that you have 30k+ posts on said forum  :lol

Awaken

I run into all kinds at shows and totally agree with the takes above.  I think it's really just the difference between being a 'fan' and a 'fanatic'.  I think the majority of the posters here probably fall toward the later and could tell you a lot about the band's history etc, while there are plenty of casual 'fan's that don't really care to discuss 'why' they like ToT better than IaW, for example.

No I get that, I do.  And I'm trying not to be "that guy".  But there's another layer to this and at the risk of sounding like TAC, it takes LONGER to make that dumb post on Facebook than it does to google "Dream Theater albums" and see the list.  Maybe I'm weird. Maybe I'm more of an anal control freak than I care to admit.  When I post - even here - about a band, or an actor, or anything really, I make every reasonable effort to be sure I'm right first.  I don't guess.

Maybe this isn't the place for this; maybe this belongs in P/R, but I can tolerate honest mistakes. I'm seeing something more, an almost willful ignorance of even WANTING to know the truth, let alone actually knowing the truth.

Agreed, but that's different.  I don't care why or even if someone likes something.  If only Images and Words gets you, that's fine.  I've been at too many shows over the years when the band goes into their "hit" and I head to the beer stand, but the crowd goes batshit.  There's a REASON Kiss plays Rock and Roll All Nite every single fucking show.  I was at Maiden a couple shows ago, and I remember my friend saying "well, it's Number of the Beast and Iron Maiden... want to head out?" and it turned out that the crowd went to ELEVEN when Number started, and it was the most energy of the night. I get that. I'm talking about more basic stuff, and I'm talking about people in general. Whether it's a band or politics or food or the NFL, why wouldn't you put at least some effort into being right?

Now that I live in a place with shows, and now that there's so many co-headlines where I'm only going for one of the headliners, I'm that person who only goes nuts for Pull Me Under quite often! "Oh I actually know this one, I clooooose my eyes Inis Moooooonaaaaa"

I completely disagree on the Discord part, and partially reddit depending on the community you're a part of. I'm in a handful of discords (personal one with my group of friends, Star trek one, tech one etc) and the conversations I have there are meaningful and engaging and both through text and voice chat (discord).

The small personal discords are great.  It's the larger open to the public ones that I lose interest in.

Maybe Marc is making a distinction I should make. I'm talking about the public places, where you get the "Everyone knows Mangini is the better drummer; who thinks this next album is going to suck?" posts.  Or the "Hey does anyone know if Dream Theater has any b-sides, and if so, where I can get them?"

I mean, I don't think I'm being unreasonable here.  I've frequently gotten into bands and the first thing I do is look at how many albums they have, and how many singles.  Spend an hour on Wikipedia and/or their official site if they have one.  Maybe at that point you can start a conversation on one of the forums.

Which public place did you have in mind exactly?

Well, I truly thought I'd be able to nab a single ticket to the Seattle show when it got closer to show time...and I WILL keep trying...but as of right now, Ticketmaster has nothing for less that $600 and that's only in the front section.

Second market tickets are available, and they have the back row of the balcony for just under $300, and they go up from there.  If prices stay like this then there's no way I'm going.

Progmaniac1988

Wait there's an album before I&W???

I'm joking I'm joking 😂

But I remember back 20ish years ago when I was in HS nobody in my little music nerd/metal head circle had or knew of WDADU except me and my brother. MAYBE a few more. A lot of those people considered themselves DT fans too. Maybe over time that changed? But I only hear about that album from us DT nerds on this forum and some hardcore DT fans lol

This has been true for me as well. Discord's where you've got like a dozen or so active users seem to be pretty fun. Popular ones where you've got dozens of active users and messages flying every couple seconds are way too much to keep up with and it does seem like a contest who has the most free time.

Now the question is...which song gets taken out? My vote goes to Constant Motion

cramx3

As I Am or Panic Attack would be my guesses and choices.  Constant Motion may be the weak link of those three songs, but it hasn't been played in much longer than the others so I'd rather see CM stick around.

lovethedrake

Replace Constant Motion with The Glass Prison(or anything from SDOIT) and As I Am with Midnight Messiah and I would be happy as a clam.

I enjoy Constant Motion. I hope it stays. I like Panic Attack less, although I know its popular..As I Am has been played a lot, so maybe change with that.

Any which way.. I think MM  ;) will be awesome live!! :metal

i was thinking of making the drive to the Atlanta show but that show is sold out now. Shit, I guess I should've just bought a ticket before and sold it later if I couldn't make it. It kinda sucks they aren't coming to FL this leg, driving 8 hours in the middle of the week would've been tough as is. I guess I'll have to wait for a 2nd leg if that happens.

ReaperKK

I remember when living in Tampa I was continously disappointed by DT passing over Florida with every tour.
