This song has grown on me. At first I was underwhelmed and a bit disappointed, but now twenty listens later it fucking rocks.

I agree that it's gross to try to make money off of it, this is why I film my reaction videos in private and don't upload them to the internet for money. They're just for me

Great continuation from AVFTTOTW. It has that same sort of style like nothing has changed at all. I enjoyed it and loved all the classic lineup sounds with MP's drumming and arrangement.

I am really looking forward to this album now as I feel it really is going to be a blend of their newer tone they had on AVFTTOTW while having arrangements and doses of that classic style they had with MP in the mix.

What song on View does NT remind you of stylistically?

Invisible Monster, Answering The Call, Awaken The Master. I should've said tone rather than style. But it does pick up from AVFTTOTW.

The second half of the solo sounds like it's taken almost directly from the title track.

I've written a private online diary/blog, whatever they're called these days, since 2004. I do first listen posts for all Dream Theater albums and occasionally other big bands/artists I really like, eg Metallica, Maiden, Steven Wilson. And it's for exactly the reason you mentioned. One day, it'll be interesting to read back and see what I thought of a given song or album when I heard it for the very first time (it already is, actually!).

I completely agree with you 👍. For various reasons, I hear AVFTTOTW more than BC&SL in this track. There's something about the overall sound, especially JP's chugga-chugga riffing and what the rest of the band is doing, that reminds me of AVFTTOTW. It does feel like a blend to some degree between AVFTTOTW and BC&SL.

After a few days of listening, I have to say it's not a track I revisit frequently, though I enjoy it when played. It feels a bit like a safe song, and I wish they had pushed the boundaries a bit more and included some twist or original sauce. Why not experiment with some new soundscapes? Also, the lyrics and that gothic cool factor are starting to feel a little stale. For a single however it's solid and I never connect that much with the singles sadly.

Just for fun, I ranked the recent singles since MP's departure to see where it stands:

1. On The Backs of Angels
2. The Gift of Music
3. Wither
4. Fall Into The Light
6. Night Terror
10. Enemy Inside
11. Paralyzed
20. Untethered Angel
30. The Alien
100. Invisible Monster

And yeah those numbers are correct.

The Alien
Fall Into The Light
Untethered Angel
Night Terror
The Gift of Music (dislike TA but like this)
Paralyzed
Enemy Inside
On The Backs of Angels
Wither

Could be bit of fun back when and there's still a few that are informative, talking about the performances production and gear etc.  But these days most are too busy talking about themselves and take 10mins to get to the damn song reaction.

Not interested!

Heh you're right I did say that. I was just going through the singles on Spotify and forgot about the premise 😅 A Right of Passage I think was the first single. Also wasn't The Looking Glass a single? It's not on Spotify as a single but I know there's a music video 🤔

Mladen

It's hard to even tell what's considered a single nowadays. For example, BMUBMD hat its own lyric video, but people don't think of it as a single.

And then, if we went by Wikipedia for example, Barstool warrior and At wit's end were singles from Distance over time.

A Rite of Passage was the advance single before the album came out.

Interesting thought, and something I hadn't really considered.

Honestly, I've probably listened to this son 20 times, which is so, so much more than any other song in years.

So, despite my initial assessment that it's a middling, 'by numbers' DT track (which I still think), if the goal of a single is to drum up interest, well, then 'mission accomplished,' lads!

As for how it compares to the list above, I think "Night Terror" is easily the best pre-release single I've heard since "As I Am." It's certainly hitting me ten times harder than, say, "Paralyzed" or "Enemy Inside."

Quote from: TheHoveringSojourn808 on October 14, 2024, 12:25:15 PMIt's the night they give out music awards on the TV. Things like best album, best video, best new artist, etc. Usually it's rigged as hell and Taylor Swift wins everything, and it's so boring, but I just know DT has a chance of baggin' a Granny this year at the awards. They won an award for The Alien.

Man, they really say you are the king of not knowing anything but ya never heard of the Grannys?

You are such a weirdo.

Not cool.  Not in the band's wishes, and therefore definitely against forum policy.

True. I think most of us only think of the singles that were released as stand-alone tracks before the album release.
For example, I count Moment Of Betrayal (which is also missing on that list) as a single, but I completely forgot that Our New World was also released as a single later.

Understood, didn't know DT had a no taping policy. There's a bootleg section on these forums so I thought it was cool.

Gave night terror a second spin and heard more things, I guess my main cons stay the same :
-It's a BC&SL track mostly, it's not refreshing enough
-The intro is too long, DT is a prog band, there is no need to make riffs turn around so many times
-The song is overall too long for nothing (not bridge or solo making it epic enough)
-The last 2 minutes are good

Did my ranking too but quality varies so much and from proggy masterpieces to radio hits style, it was hard.
The Alien (masterpiece)
Enemy Inside
Untethered Angel
On The Backs of Angels
The Gift of Music
Fall Into The Light
Night Terror
Invisible Monster
Paralyzed

Wither (always loved this track its the metal "unwritten" lol also the solo is f'n insane without being flashy like a short TSCO)

Night Terror (just awesome)

Paralyzed (a modern never enough)

The Alien (high energy and not as cynical/dark)

Enemy Inside (probably favorite riff/drum combo)

Invisible Monster (solid song and concept although sleeping giant is similar subject...btw does it bother anyone else that awaken the master and AVFTTOTW are similar subject and both borrow from misunderstood?!)

On The Backs of Angels (a little too cynical for me and can't get over arrangement like pull me under, although I respect this was prob 1st step of a long journey for JP to get to the awesome place he is now)

Untethered Angel (just felt a little by the numbers so never fully dove into it. Its super solid but just not my cup of tea. So much angels doing stuff)

Fall Into The Light (just dont love the riff feels out of place though the chugy groove is fun)

The Gift of Music (I listened to this a TON because i wanted new DT and was hoping Mangini was finally "untethered" like it felt on the enemy inside, but this album it wasn't meant to be. I did see this on tour in nyc and it was really special though so go figure, just hasn't survived the "this is new" after subsequent releases)
