New video...

https://www.fuse.tv/videos/2012/10/watch-world-premiere-of-kamelot-s-sacrimony-angel-of-afterlife

I find this a decent song but it's pretty unoriginal by Kamelot standards and just sounds like it's trying to copy songs from Epica or The Black Halo.  I can't get over how much of a replica Tommy's vocal delivery, phrasing and melodies are to Khan.

I think it's all Youngblood (assuming he's the main songwriter) knows how to do, honestly. It's not a bad thing, if the tunes are good, and I'm sure they wanted vocal continuity, and I'm fine with that too, as Tommy pulls it off effortlessly, and it never sounds forced, like say, Stu Block in Iced Earth.

cramx3

I agree. I think the "Tommy sounds like Khan" comes at least partly because of the songs and style of Thomas Youngbloods writing. While I only listened to the album once, I could hear Tommy sounding like Khan on Sacrimony and some other songs that sound more like the style and then on some songs that aren't as typical Kamelot sounding, Tommy sounds more like himself. Also, after one listen I am very happy and excited to listen again.

Zook

You could pretend that Khan left for a while to improve his voice a little, and then returned for Silverthorn. That's how freakishly close Tommy sounds to Khan.

He's not quite as good as Khan. Not for Kamelot anyway.

Seems like Khan left at the right time anyhow.

The Black Halo is still their best album, and I don't think they're ever gonna come close to top it.

Yes, that is definitely their high water mark.

Haven't heard the new one yet, but I know a few reviewers who have heard it and three out of five of them told me not to bother with it.  :mehlin
Hear it first ;)

I don't steal music off the internet, I only buy it.  So, nah.  I'll pass.  The tracks I've heard haven't really done much for me and their last two albums kinda sucked.

cramx3

Easily the best album since The Black Halo. I'm really loving it so far. Falling like the Fahrenheit is my favorite so far.

I agree with all of this.

I actually meant, at one of your reviewer-friend's house or something, but then I remembered you might know them over the internet :lol

Is listening to a friends' copy in his car or at his house technically stealing?

So for some reason Amazon isn't selling this CD anymore. And no stores in my city are selling it either.

I ordered it from CD Universe, but have a feeling I'll get a disappointing e-mail about it sometime before it's supposed to ship.

Anyone know the deal?

Zook

Maybe they recalled it because the production was so bad.

Seriously, I can't enjoy this album fully because of the production.

kirksnosehair

I was going to give it a try if Amazon was selling a digital version, but they're not.  :|

To which previous Kamelot album would you compare the production?

Excluding the Pre- Karma and Poetry (because I don't remember what it sounds like) albums, none. They've all had decent to great production, but this one just sucks.

Damn. I am rather turned off by bad production. However Sacrimony didn't seem too bad based off the youtube version. It was a bit flat, but not too bad.

That's the main problem. It's flat and packs no punch.

Adami

I thought Ghost Opera was about as flat a production as Kamelot could possibly get.

There's no way Silverwhatever has flatter production than Ghost Opera.

Zook

I guess it has similar production to Ghost Opera, but the sound quality is horrendous.

Well in a week or so when I get to hear it, I'll make an informed comment.

Quick question though, is blue haired girl on more than just Sacrimony? What about Amaranthe girl?

Elize Ryd (Amaranthe) – clean female vocals on "Sacrimony (Angel of Afterlife)", "Veritas", and "Falling Like the Fahrenheit"
Alissa White-Gluz (The Agonist) – guttural vocals on "Sacrimony (Angel of Afterlife)" and clean female vocals on "Prodigal Son Part III: The Journey"

The more blue haired girl, the better.

I have to become familiar with her work if I'm gonna marry her.

I'd say Sacrimomy is a good representation of the album's production. I'm reluctant to give a verdict on production around here though since loads of people complain about production I think is absolutely fine then rave about the production of albums I think sound crap. I guess I'd say the new album's production sounds most like Karma out of the ones I've heard, but I haven't heard any of the ones before that.

Main complaints about the album are the production (but at the same time, based on what you guys complain about and rave about maybe you'll love it), and the fact that it's not quite as memorable and great as The Black Halo musically. But still, it does grow on you (songs like Torn, My Confession and Silverthorn I didn't think much of on first listen have some good to offer so I can't say I dislike any song) and its definitely interesting me as much or more than any Kamelot album other than Epica and The Black Halo.

cramx3

I don't like the production on this either. Since the black halo the production on their albums has been terrible.

However, I love the album.

kirksnosehair

If it's anywhere near the level of The Fourth Legacy, Karma, Epica or The Black Halo, then it's probably worth getting, but I still can't find a copy to buy digitally  :\

wolfking

Just listening to Silverthorn for the first time now.  It's pretty standard and safe for Kamelot.  First few songs were pretty good though and I'm only up to My Confession.

As far as production goes, I hear no problems with the production at all, for Sascha Paeth who I have never been a fan of, it's some of his best sounding work IMHO.  It sounds way better than Poetry and Opera.

cramx3

Just looked at their sets in Europe and very surprised they aren't playing much from silverthorn.  Only three songs a night.

Four, actually. For some reason Veritas is listed as "Others" on setlist.fm. Still, I was expecting more new songs. But maybe they will start to play more new songs once fans had enough time to listen to it and can sing along.

cramx3

Even four isn't much. Usually a new singer with a new album means mostly new songs. Id really like to see more new songs since I'm absolutely loving silverthorn.

Zook

They must have Jon Schaffer as their manager. When Crucible of Man came out, they only played Birth Of The Wicked and sometimes I Walk Alone. And they only played Come What May once during that tour.

Adami

Okay, listened to the album a few times.

Songs aren't bad. But yea, they don't jump out as much as Black Halo or Epica. However they're better than Ghost Opera and Poetry.

As far as the production goes, from what I can hear, it's mostly a mastering problem. However, it's still not bad enough to bother me much.

Oh yea, the ballad song? Freaking beautiful, Tommy and Oliver really shine.

And I was very disappointed that blue haired girl can't even be heard on Prodigal Son. Where is she on it?

Yea, I got to give Oliver some props. I think this is the best work he has done on any album as a whole.  Song for Jolee is beautiful and his leads and solos are very nice throughout the album.

Dunno about his leads, they seem kind of "random power metal lead 1, 2, 3 etc".

I think my main issue with the album is that I've heard it like 4 or 5 times and outside of Sacrimony, I can't remember a single melody or riff. Though I enjoy the hell out of the album when I listen to it.
