I know this band doesn't get much love around here.  Here's the place to discuss why and/or to add appreciation.

I've spent my evening listening to the band's early albums and singles.  They were one hell of an R&B outfit!  Even today, they play the blues as easily and naturally as anyone (well, at least among white folks from Britain...).

Plus, one can't help but admire the solid body of work that is Beggar's Banquet, Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main Street.

I'm a big Stones fan. And that string of albums you mentioned (1968-1972) are just brilliant stuff. They are a part of my holy 60s trinity together with the Beatles and the Who.

Phantasmatron

The only one I have is Aftermath.  I consider "Angie" to be one of the greatest break-up songs of all time.  And "Out of Time" is fantastic.

And then they have some classic-rock-radio-hits that I like, too.

rumborak

That band always boggled my mind as to their popularity. I'm listening to it and can not see in the slightest the excitement a lot of people have for this band.

This is really the only thing I listen to from the Stones anymore. I like GHS and IORR too, but the rest is really hit or miss.

Considering The Rolling Stones are all ancient, they're pretty energetic on stage, and I gotta hand it to them for their longevity.
As for the music, I've never been a fan. Mick Jagger can't carry a tune, and they're a bit too sloppy for my liking.

Cool Chris

I used to be a big fan when I was more in to classic rock. Now I barely listen to them, but will play them on occasion. I definitely think of them more as a 'singles' band than an 'album' band, as their ratio of great songs to crap is pretty low. But I made what I think is a pretty solid 2CD compilation of their material, which I'd match up against any compilation from any classic rock band.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Agreed, one of the few songs that could make me cry.

I think the "sloppiness" has always been a part of their charm.  The Stones seemed to make a calculated effort to play their chords and drumbeats in the most loosey-goosey possible way.

El Barto

I never thought any of them were particularly talented (in a relative sense).  However, they've written 2 perfect songs, and come real close to a third.    Plus a string of very entertaining singles.  This boggles the mind.  It'd be like AC/DC suddenly writing A Change of Seasons for the last song on For Those About to Rock.

Marvellous G

Gimme Shelter is the coolest song of all time.

Fluffy Lothario

So, I've tried the Forty Licks soundtrack, and while I like a lot of what I'm hearing, there's just far too much there.

Could one of you folks who is familiar with their stuff look at the track listing and take the 20 best/most essential/whatever tracks out? It doesn't matter if it goes past 80 minutes, I just want the must hear, or the 'must hear'er half of the Best Of.

Zydar

Alright, I took 10 songs from each CD of the 40 Licks compilation which I consider to be their most essential tracks.

01. Gimme Shelter
02. Satisfaction
03. Jumpin' Jack Flash
04. Sympathy for The Devil
05. She's a Rainbow
06. Wild Horses
07. Ruby Tuesday
08. Paint it Black
09. Honky Tonk Women
10. Let's Spend The Night Together
11. Start Me Up
12. Brown Sugar
13. Miss You
14. Beast of Burden
15. Happy
16. Angie
17. Mixed Emotions
18. Anybody Seen My Baby
19. Tumbling Dice
20. It's Only Rock 'n' Roll

sirbradford117

That's a pretty good summary of their career.

Fluffy Lothario

Sweet, cheers. Now I'll probably start with that list and give the others some time once I'm familiar with these.

ShadowWalker

Anybody enjoying the deluxe Get Yer Ya-Yas Out! re-release? I think they should have combined discs one and two and integrated everything in the proper running order. Havnig the opening sets was an interesting bonus as well. Too bad a video of the whole concert was not available...

El Barto

I watched Cocksucker Blues last night.  Anybody else seen it?

Not a great film, but there's some pretty good insight in it.  It's hard for me to fathom that sex, drugs and rock and roll could somehow become commonplace to the point of tedium.  Often times it was quite pathetic.

Zook

More like Rolling Bones. aha aha aha

I like Paint It Black.

Accelerando

I've always liked the stones!  I don't have any extensive catalog or anything.  I have the 40 Licks cd's and Get Yer Ya Ya's Out.  A buddy of mine got me into that live version of Sympathy For The Devil where Mick Taylor and Keith Richards dual solo's.  Amazing stuff!

Sex, drugs, and rockandroll indeed.  Yeah, it's not the greatest film... but it sure proves a lot!

Cocksucker Blues is great! Really raw footage of the drug craziness happening in the 70s.

And if I recall correctly, the picture of Keith in front of the Drug Free America sign comes from that movie, which is awesome.  :lol

All I know is Satisfaction, which is in my top 10 most annoying songs of all time.

These guy's are absolutely the best thing that ever happened to music. The fact they are still writing and recording is so amazing. Thank you so much guys the world wouldn't be the same with out you.

Now I can finally say that I know *one* Rolling Stones fan.  :rollin :rollin :rollin

You don't like them?
I think my dad introduced me to them ages ago, and it was so fun to watch Mike movements were hilarious to me.
Growing up I got to like them more and more, and the drummer was a beast on his own.

EPICVIEW

seen them many times since 1979,,,   I like the new tune   its fun enough and it sounds like the Stones.

I love the early stuff before Brian died. But I just feel like it gets so spotty after that.  I pretty much view them is an over rated bar band. The only reason they're considered legends is because of their longevity, which I will tip my cap to.

Interesting comments coming from such a big AC/DC fan.

Maybe because I consider AC/DC to be far more relevant than The Rolling Stones.

Not one of my bands, though saw them twice on Bridges to Babylon tour (and the they're old/washed jokes were already going strong then) They're absolutely legends of their time, not of longevity. They were the first peak of sex drugs n rock... I mean 70s Bianca  come on

I guess if anything they're the epitome of having some great music, and then keep putting on a great show. Thinking of Jimmy Buffet this week and what does it mean to have entertaining music but nothing necessarily new or groundbreaking? Just keep on entertaining

That would be a mistake    The Stones from 71 to 73 may be up there, for the best 3 album run ever.

For the record, according to Wikipedia, verified units have AC/DC being higher on the top selling artists of all time than the Stones.

And I would take High Voltage thru For Those About to Rock over any Stones run.

King Postwhore

Seems even to me by Googling.  When I'm partying,  give me AC/DC.

Well, I'd take AC/DC over the Stones any day of the week, but my point is still valid.

I've been right all day long. Ain't gonna stop now! ;D
