Generally, it takes about 8-9 months from starting the writing to release date. (ToT, 8VM, SC, ADToE, D/T as my references)

fadetoblackdude7

DT usually spends about 2-4 weeks mixing their albums if I'm not mistaken. But it depends on the album. I know TA took a lot longer cuz JP said they had around 500 tracks total, which is insane.

Not sure how long mastering takes.

Trav

Then there is a lengthy marketing campaign that InsideOut does a pretty good job of. But this time it may be different considering the upcoming tour.

devieira73

If DT wasn't planning to release this album next year, I think this album really could be ready and out before the beginning of the tour.

Exactly. I think some people are anticipating a release soon because you hear about everyone finishing up their parts. But it's probably less about getting it done for the release, as it is getting it done in time to get ready for their tour.

Good news! I assume they'll announce the album and release a single before the London show, but would doubt a full release would occur before then, given it's just under three months away. But hey, I'm frequently wrong.

Max, maybe I'm missing something, but all I see is a pic of JL in the studio. Where does it say that today he finished up recording the vocals?
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

It's being implied from the description of "Vocals ✅ #DT16"

Gotcha. I'd hope for something a bit more direct since I saw that description, but it never registered that's what was meant.

I'd be extremely surprised if they could get the album mixed and mastered before the end of September.

By my calculations, it's been usually about 3 weeks for mixing, yeah. You must have the same algorithm i do

I hope they'll mix like AVFTTOTW, riff per riff, so we always hear the best of each !

As an old timey DT fan going to the O2 show, I am kind of hoping they don't release the album until afterwards. The new album might be great, but I would be quite happy if the O2 show was a full nostalgia trip focusing mainly on the "classic" era. Having said this, if the new album turns out to be the greatest thing ever I will probably be sad not to see the new material live.

illusionist

Aside the release date, I'm wondering if they announce album and songs titles, or reveal the cover art before the O2 gig.

Progmaniac1988

Awesome news! I'd love to hear an Andy Sneap mix again personally! He did an amazing job with AVFTTOTW and now with some DT experience I think he could possibly top it! Hearing Portnoys drums with Views production is making my mouth salivate just thinking about it! (Ok maybe I love this band too much! 😂)

Trav

I vote to bring back Kevin Shirley to mix.

Quote from: TheHoveringSojourn808 on July 30, 2024, 03:58:56 PMMaybe there's a few instrumental numbers and he didn't have to sing as much this time.

To be clear, I bet he's still on it a lot, but maybe not as many as usual. By my calculations, he should still be in the studio for another week or so. So either he is not singing as much or he was so good it all came out perfect in one take

:lol A "few" instrumental numbers?!? How many songs do you think are on DT16? I'd wager 8 or less. If he nailed his vocals in one take, I'll hand you the keys to my house and cars.

I'd be content with that too. Falling into infinity sounds amazing sonically, and Scenes too! I'd say FII, SFAM, and AVFTTOTW have my fav DT mix and masters. BCSL as a very close #4.

Quote from: Caleb on July 31, 2024, 04:30:14 AMI agree, nothing beats the Kevin mix

Indeed the best-sounding DT albums were mixed by Kevin, even compared to View (and nowadays, I think SC and BLSL sound really good and I always liked a lot Awake, Octavarium and D/T). However, besides DT, I've never heard such an excellent mix from him, especially recently. Some of Paul Gilbert and Joe Bonamassa albums sound good, but Black Country Communion have always sounded a bit muffled in my opinion. So, he still can do the "magic" again with DT? I still think that Jens Bogren could do a powerfull mix with DT.

Yeah, true, I feel Kevin might be possible since JP said he dialed in his old classic guitar tones, so it seems they are trying to capture a "classic" sound, but I have a feeling they may go with a more modern mixer. In that case I'd say Sneap would be great, but if they go the nostalgic route Shirly all the way!

Schurftkut

i'm still hoping for a Steven Wilson mix for a DT album. Let the guys sound natural for once

Max Kuehnau

well, IIRC, SW doesn't really like their music (if at all), so that's unlikely I guess, and it's no secret that he won't mix anything he doesn't like. (not that I'd mind this time around, since I won't listen to DT16 but anyway :D )

No doubt, it also would be an amazing choice! PT heavier albums soud incredible!! All of them does it, but for comparision's sake, their "heavier" albums are closer to DT sound.

BUT... like Max said, it seems like SW doesn't like DT music at all, so it would be hard for him to do the job.
