I respect the opinions of you all that say BL&SL is a bad album, I really do. Great opinions... your all just wrong is all lol

emtee

Some things I've been wondering;

-Will the first note be the last note of BCaSl like they used to do or have they moved past that?
-Will MP do any call-backs to previous songs like he used to?
-Will a song start with a drum fill?
-Will JR have a memorable, signature type solo on the grand piano?

MP said he was happy they discontinued the albums leading into one another. I forget which album broke that "tradition"

That was Systematic Chaos, since the run of bookending albums was from Met2 to Octa
All my natural instincts are begging me to stop
But somehow I carry on, heading for the top
A physical absurdity, a tremendous mental game
Helping me understand exactly who I am

My thoughts:

-Will the first note be the last note of BCaSl like they used to do or have they moved past that?
I think they stopped this but I could see it coming back

-Will MP do any call-backs to previous songs like he used to?
Maybe if this album is a concept album

-Will a song start with a drum fill?
I'd bet money on this, I'd even bet money that the first song of the album starts with a drum fill

-Will JR have a memorable, signature type solo on the grand piano?
Probably not, no

Black Louds & Silver Linings?  :lol

I guess the wrong opinions are the loudest, eh?  :rollin

Yep, the whole "meta-album" thing was just four albums, and then SC ended up being bookended by its own epic, and the BC&SL was its own thing.

I've been meaning to bring this up; I just got Coldplay's "Everyday Life" and when I popped it in the CD player, it read "24 tracks".  So I looked at the song list - 16 tracks - and wondered what the what.  maybe it was like Tool's record where between the second to last and last song there were like 58 2-second spaces, so the last song was number "69".

No, it was song 9 was titled "G", song 10 was titled "O", song 11 was titled "D" and so on to spell "G - O - D - = - L - O - V - E", and the music was the Westminster Chimes lasting I'm guessing about 45 seconds or so.

I LOVE playing with the format. I love the sequencing of In Presence Of Enemies into parts, ala "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" on Floyd's Wish You Were Here.  I like the negative time sound effect interludes on Octavarium... for me it shows thought and creativity and investment.  Michael Moorcock, the author, used to do the same with his writing.

Mosh

I always felt like the beginning of OTBOA kinda had a similar feel to the end of TCOT. Not sure if it was an intentional nugget, probably not but it reminded me of the way they used to have the albums segue into each other. If they were going to bring that back it would have to connect to the previous album, not the one they released 15 years ago (in general I think people are going to be surprised when it sounds more like a continuation of View, since that's where the majority of the band is at musically).

The secrecy around this album and the fact that it seems like they aren't even going to preview it on this upcoming tour really makes me think they went the concept album route. It's going to be pretty anticlimactic if the big reveal is a "normal" DT album with a bunch of unrelated songs. Feels like they're going bigger than that.

bosk1

Who said anything about a "big reveal?"  Keeping specifics about an album under wraps until it drops is pretty SOP for them.

Quote from: Stadler on August 22, 2024, 06:44:12 AMI don't know the details, but I do know Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was recorded at Morgan Studios in mid-1973, and Yes was recording Tales From Topographic Oceans in the same studio.

That could explain it yeah.
DISPLAY thy breasts, my Julia!

I'm just going to say that bosky coming back at this moment seems suspicious. He knows something we don't.

They'll have the usual press release a couple of months before the release date of the title, artwork, and track listing like all bands do. Probably get a lead track streaming. Nothing unusual.

I'm with you, I'm a sucker for all of that stuff.

In the docu / interview about The Absolute Universe (TransAtlantic V) both Morse and Stolt reveal that it was Portnoy that brought up releasing it as a two-version conceptalbum. And with his own mixing there became a third 'full experience' version.

I can only hope Portnoy brought that kind of creative mind-momentum to DTHQ.

Schurftkut

i don't think that really was a creative decision as much as trying to keep everyone happy in the band. As in, Morse and Stolz clashed and MP suggested doing both views, hence all the versions of that album. And then TA stopped.

I sincerely hope it is not a concept album.
✨fangirl (noun) : a girl or woman who is an extremely or overly enthusiastic fan of someone or something✨

✨fangirl (verb) : to exhibit fandom often to an excessive degree : to behave like an extremely devoted or overly excited fangirl✨

I sincerely hope it's an album with musical notes on it, sprinkled with some drum hits throughout.

All that I'm hoping is that it is an album with some music in it

So a JM beatbox album is not on the horizon this time.

I don't have VERY strong feelings on that topic, but overall, I think any full-album version of a Metropolis Part 3 is a weak idea, and any other concept album will by its very nature fall short of Scenes From A Memory, so it seems like setting themselves up for problems.  Just seems like a better idea not to bother with that.

I just wished they had rerecorded the vocals for To Tame A Land during the BC&SL sessions. But yes, James is otherwise amazing on that disc.

It's an amazing performance. That, Stargazer, and the Queen medley are amazing.

YES!! That guitar solo is amazing. Love the keyboard intro too

I haven't listened to that covers CD since it came out. I have to re-visit it this weekend. I remember liking Stargazer and that Zebra song.

That Queen cover is out of this world. I've never heard a better Queen cover.

BM was also positive about the cover, which he isn't most of the time people cover Queen

"Bloody hell... DREAM THEATER seem to be amazing ... thanks. I had not heard this... Beautifully done... great vocals ... great musicianship ... great production... and ... Cop that solo in 'Tenement Funster'!! Ouch! Thanks... ! Love it. and it's a great compliment to us... OK ... I have to hear more now. Great to hear someone 'do' our stuff, and fathom all our conjuring tricks, and then add some great new ones of their own."

What if it's all just Portnoy drumming away with a few musical notes sprinkled throughout.
