When I had my college radio show, I used that for my intro as well. As soon as it got to "...ultraviolence", I'd hit the first sing.

I loved the intro music on the last tour, but the one for the DoT tour was this bombastic, futuristic classical piece. Idk what it was (does anyone here know?), but it was perfect!

Love the idea of Debbie Gibson's Staying Together. Takes me back.

I'd quite like a return to Psycho, though.

Pathetic clowns that have no business getting paid to write stuff.

I guess they saw that one video of Devin singing The Spirit Carries On with Dream Theater and assumed he was the lead vocalist since he was so much better than James :neverusethis:

Also DT? Devin Townsend? Dream Theater? Coincidence? I think not....

Despite goofing with having a picture of someone who isn't a member of Dream Theater, Rolling Stone putting Dream Theater on a metal list like that at all, much less ahead of legendary metal bands like Maiden and Sabbath, is somewhat impressive. Every other band/musician listed was/is more mainstream than Dream Theater has ever been.

Even placed them at #2.

The thing about LaBrie that will keep him in my top 5 favorite singers of all-time forever is his versatility. And, as he ages, he doesn't lose the magic. Some singers hit a certain age and boom, they sound horrible from then onward. LaBrie is built differently. Guy incurs illness and somehow still belts it like he's the youngest singer on the radio, despite not being hardly ever out front. I respect LaBrie so much for maintaining his gift.
Half of my posts are satire; the other half are serious. If you can't tell which half you're looking at, it's probably the former. I enjoy busting chops amongst likeminded fellows. Where better to feel at home than among the fans of the world's most fun band? :)

Ummmm....massive JLB fan here, but I might have to disagree with much of the above. Yes, on record, he still sounds great, and hell yes, the man is incredibly versatile.

That said, 'the youngest singer on the radio' feels like a bit of a stretch.

To my ears, JLB's voice is appropriately weathered and worn considering his age. No different than Robert Plant or [insert virtually any other singer 50 years plus]

His 'on record' performances still exceed my expectations, but 'live' has been a different story. I am hopeful that the upcoming tour will see a reverse of that trend.

SeRoX

I kind of agree about "the youngest singer" thing, especially on the studio. Live is another matter but I remember when A View came out I couldn't believe how young and fresh James sounds. Maybe there is a studio magic in it but still...

that video is from a while ago already, his live vocals were still passable then.

Quote from: DT05 on August 26, 2024, 01:40:32 PMJames vocals speak for themselves.

Would this video speak better to his current abilities or would recent live recordings be a more realistic gauge of how he is likely to perform in the future?
Disclaimer: All opinions stated are my own unless otherwise specified. I do not personally know any present or former members of DT. From time to time where the context is or should be obvious, I may decline to explicitly label my words as opinion. I cannot predict the future.

Puppies_On_Acid

I wish people would stop posting his Cameo videos. They are in no way indicative of how he performs live.

I'm going to start posting the video of him singing The Spirit Carries On with Devin Townsend on the Dreamsonic tour in response to the Cameo videos.

The long and short of it is this, age and vocal injuries have caught up with him. I still enjoy his vocals in the studio, but live is a different story. It is what it is.

Recent live recordings would be closer. I mean, this short video was made at home while he was well rested and could release the best take. Studio James is still amazing, but as it was discussed at the time when this Cameo came out, it's really meaningless.

I agree he is definitely way better in the studio, but as for recent live performances, there's not really much against him to be honest. The few videos I found of the AVFTTOTW tour were not official, so they were peoples own recordings on their phone, and as we all know, phone microphones do not capture the sound very well! And in terms of the D/T tour, I listened to Through Her Eyes live at Hammersmith, and he really did not sound bad at all! Obviously, if you were at a show on the AVFTTOTW tour, then you'll have a much better understanding of how is live voice is doing, but as I wasn't there, this is what I'm going off!

BOHICA! Mobile phones being accused of making a singer sound worse than they were again :lol

I'd rather be at the venue listening to James than on The Bridge watching a YouTube video but live, my ears know he's often singing the wrong pitch. And it's exactly the same when I watch back random phone recordings. It is what it is (and I've voted with my wallet over the last six or seven years in particular) and it has been for years. He's still the voice of DT and long may that remain the case.

That's not really true.  If he sounds bad on a phone recording, then he was bad that night.

This! I like his Cameo videos but they are snippets done at the comfort of his home with the ability to do as many retakes as he likes. This isn't a 3 hour evening with set.
