I've never done it, because when it was becoming prevalent, I was handling actual checks less and less often.  I totally get the convenience, but I just never have to do it.

Yeah, this is part of it. If I ever have checks to deposit, there's usually cash that needs to be deposited as well.

Checks are definitely few and far between, but still significantly more common than me depositing cash (can't recall the last time that happened for me).  I just generally don't deal with cash that often. But I'm sure that's different for everyone.

Quote from: El Barto on August 28, 2024, 08:27:15 AMSee, that's interesting. I wouldn't do direct deposit, myself. I want to have a paper cheque. I want the instant notification that it was accepted within seconds of me initiating the deposit. Like you, that's probably a Me thing, and I'm sure something I could work around it, but I could see myself discovering a problem weeks later when I'm trying to pay bills and having a rough time sorting it out because the whole transaction was invisible to me.

We should chat about that next time we have a beer.   I don't know how your company does it, but I have absolutely as good a record - one might argue, a little better record - of my pay transactions because of direct deposit.  And I actually get the money - no holds - at least a day before I even get the check, and in some cases, even if it's a payroll check, it still might get a hold on it (I get a twice-annual check that isn't just my normal pay, and those have holds on them).

I had to go inside my bank recently to get a bunch of cash since there's a limit at an ATM.  That was my first time speaking to a teller in maybe 11 years since I last needed a certified check. The problem, I can't predict when I'll need the in person service again, so it's good to have.

Like El Barto, most of my cash is in a HYSA on an app/online. I keep a small amount and my direct deposit from work in a normal checking/savings account for my daily usage.  It's free, so there's no point in closing it when I still occassionally find usefulness of it. Transfer anything I want to put into savings into the other account.

I don't use a local credit union, just one of the big banks because it's super convenient in this part of the country as Chase is literally everywhere.  I don't use it for my mortgage or any other loans, maybe I'd rather use local if I went that route in the future.

You travel internationally, too. It's probably smart to have a bigger bank in that context too.

My company currently employs 5 people. Ain't no direct deposit here! Office manager prints cheques on an old Epson dot matrix printer using accounting software that can only be run in DOS. :lol

Like I said, I'm sure I could work around it. The thing for me is that I initiate the deposit and I get instant feedback that it was accepted and approved. It's the "I initiate it" part that matters to me. It's not just happening out of sight, out of mind. Yeah, I could get a text update, but it's not the same as watching it happen when I'm ready for it to happen.

I didn't actually consider that, but I guess thats a good point too. Although it's been nice to not have to go anywhere for work in a year now.

It's funny, every time I travel I always take cash with me (usually exchange it to whatever country currency I am travelling to, a few days before the trip). It never occurred to me until my recent trip to London to just get a CC with travel perks. A lot of places are not accepting cash anymore, so I ended up using my current card more than the actual cash I took (lost money exchanging what was left to dollars).

On an exasperating note, I applied for a new CC, and a few days later got a letter that had more red flags than all my Exes combined. It was asking for me to call to provide my personal information and threatening that the IRS was going to charge a penalty fee if I didn't provide the information  :lol

Holy shit!  Very nice.

Many of our customers are small businesses, some VERY small, whose owners don't have email, but definitely still fax things and occasionally mail them.  The mind boggles.

Banking system is different up here - there are 5 big Chartered Banks. There is one online-only bank Tangerine (formerly the Canadian brand for ING).  There are credit unions all over the place (but less than 100 nationally I seem to recall).  I was in my bank a few months ago withdrawing large sum of money for the jingle.kids' graduation gift, and also withdrawing USD and Euros.

I do my investing and insurance (P&C and life) with same said institution.  I meet with my financial advisor once a year; haven't spoken to anyone but the call-centre for stuff related to my P&C insurance.  Life insurance - it was 10+ years ago since I last had to renew some policies - all done over email/phone.

Can't remember the last time I had to e-Deposit a cheque - probably a gov't rebate a couple years back.  That's all direct deposit now.  I haven't had my pay come from a cheque in about 25 years  I didn't think that was still a thing.  Last time I had to write cheques was when I was doing renovations in '22 and '23, when the amounts were more than I could email transfer.

I sold a ticket on TickPick a while back. I was glad to get some money back for a ticket I couldn't use. They're ready to pay me now, but instead of simply putting it back on my CC, they've got two to choose from, or instead of just sending me a cheque, or instead of doing anything themselves I have to create an account with yet another online wallet service, whether I want to or not. Another place waiting to get hacked. Another place harvesting all of the data they can get from me (which is the object of the exercise in this case). Another bunch of hoops to jump through. And all of this just so I can link their Hyperwallet service to my Paypal account. And I couldn't even provide a bunch of fake information like I normally do because I have no idea what forms of payouts they could actually do (bank account, Venmo, or PP).

I love Tickpick and will continue using them to buy tickets. I won't be selling tickets through them anymore.

edit: And now PayPal has a feature where they'll transfer your money to you immediately for 1.75%. Or, if you don't want to pay they'll just sit on it for 3 days and then transfer it. Money for nothing.

Cool Chris

That first paragraph... yep not a service I would ever use.

The second paragraph... is that new? I hardly ever use PayPal outside of buying stuff on eBay. Maybe I just never cared about the delay because I never use it for large enough transactions.

Like I said, Tickpick is great overall. I've gone to plenty of shows for a tiny fraction of face value because of them. It's the first time I've sold a ticket through them, though. That annoyed me a lot.

No idea. I use them for buying stuff, but this was the first time I had money there that I wanted back in 10 years.

I've lost ESPN due to a "expired contract" which means no Monday night football games. I know it will get resolved somehow but it sucks that I pay monthly for a service that I can't get.  >:(

This could be a factor in me getting rid of DirecTv but of course, not until after the football season.

I'm weak, I know it.  :(

I have a co-worker who over-reacts to everything. I don't just mean that they get overly stressed over little things (though that is definitely the case), but they just have whatever reaction is appropriate to whatever circumstance, multiplied by 10. Minor inconvenience? World-ending stress. Something mildly amusing happens? Guttural, wheezing, minutes-long laughter. They may be the most annoying person I've ever met. Super nosy too.

Following up on the fake Paypal invoice I got a few months ago, I got a 'sextortion' email today asking to send 2k in bitcoin to some guy named Jarrod Desimone.

It's a typical type of sextortion scam that includes a picture of your home along with the address and phone number. Only in this case, the address was not my home lol, I did live there a while back and the picture included was actually of the neighbors house.

They say they hacked your webcam and mic by remote access (RDP) and have a video of you jerking off while watching filthy porn and threaten to forward the video to all your friends, family and contacts in 24 hours if you don't pay up.

I'm surprised this thing escaped gmail's filtering as the wording is pretty boiler plate with spelling mistakes etc.

Reading on Krebs, it's becoming more prevalent and they suggest to forward to the FBI. Other suggestions I've read are to forward to the FTC. Haven't done those yet, I wonder how they deal with it and if they actually are able to locate the perps by the bitcoin wallets.
