I think it's finally time they get their own thread, I know they already have a few big fans here.  Another new single just came out, and it's fairly straightforward, but still pretty great.

For those that have never heard them, they are essentially an alt metal/progressive metalcore/djent band.  Their first EP is probably of the most interest to prog fans, particularly with the 3-part suite they did, "The Mara Effect".  Here is part 1 for a sample.

Their album Eternal Blue two years blew me away, was my album of the year, and has definitely altered and expanded my taste in noticeable ways since then.  It's in contention for the most important album to me in the past few years, and will be in my all-time top 50 when I do that in the near future.  I've discovered many other vaguely similar bands since then, but no one else excels quite as well with the contrast of harsh and beautiful clean vocals, massive guitar tone, ethereal clean tones, industrial-ish electronic elements and such.  Here is a sample of one of their relatively mellower songs from it (though much heavier topically).

The new single is solid, but yeah, a bit more straightforward. That's OK, I like it

Seen them twice in the last two years, incredible concerts.

Their No Doubt cover they were doing last US tour was incredible, here's my video of it (including Rotoscope)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdrhzjy-2S4 the ass shaking part of the show!  :metal

Yeah, that's a good package, since "Rotoscope" was essentially "what if Garbage was super-heavy?"  No Doubt and Garbage are two of my favorite 90s bands, so it gets across their update of that flavor.

I dont think I ever noticed a similarity between Rotoscope and Garbage but I think I can see it with that chorus. I'm not too into Garbage though so it never crossed my mind (I do enjoy them, seen them twice).

Fucking amazing band, seen them twice as well, once on their recent headline tour, and the other in front of thousands at Aftershock where they fucking slayed. Their headline show was insane though, never thought I'd see the whole floor of a venue turn into a pit, but yeah, that happened during Holy Roller. The band is solid, and Courtney is one of my favorite new vocalists.

Still haven't sampled the new single, I'm in the middle of my roulette listening, I'll probably get to it tomorrow night.

Music video for the new single.  Super dark, heavy, and ethereal.

Half of the upcoming EP is already out now, and all are great tracks so far, it's certainly going to be in contention for EP of the year.

LithoJazzoSphere

New EP The Fear of Fear is out.

Music video for "Ultraviolet" was just released.

Music video for "Angel Eyes" premieres in a few hours.

At 25 minutes the EP is almost as long as some albums this year (maybe longer than a few), definitely a high contender for my year-end lists either way.

lonestar

Absolutely, gave it two solid spins this morning. It's absolutely outstanding.

Meant to post this earlier, but they have a new single out.  On the heavier side, but still atmospheric.  I hope that means a new album is on the horizon, though with their past release schedule, I'll bet if so we'll get another single every few months for awhile first.

I hate this "release a single and tour off it" that a lot of bands are doing, and specifically Spiritbox. If and when an album finally comes, if it'll all be songs we've heard from the last couple years I'll be so annoyed.

I kind of get it though, it's the way things are now with streaming and touring to keep fresh with new music when you hit the road, but I would really like a full album from them.

Song is good, maybe not my favorite of their recent singles, but solid.

LithoJazzoSphere

Meant to post this a few days ago.  There's a new music video for "Soft Spine" out.  Maybe it's just me, but I see some H.R. Giger influence in the design of the spine and some of the tubing in the background.

cramx3

I captured the same song live last week

Spiritbox - Soft Spine LIVE @ Prudential Center Newark NJ 9/23/2024

Thought they were really good in the 25 minute opening slot they had, but probably wouldn't of been my choice of songs although I hadn't seen all the new songs yet.

lonestar

Tatiana from Jinjer joined Spiritbox for Circle With Me at Louder than Life.

Fucking fuckity fuck fuck...  :omg:

LithoJazzoSphere

Wow, maybe I've totally missed something, but I think that might be the first live Spiritbox footage I've seen that isn't from a cellphone.

Good thing too, cause the sound guys fucked up and the crowd couldn't hear Tatiana throughout most of the song. Only the soundboard got it. Go check some fancam, it's a huge fail.

That entire louder than life set from Spiritbox seemed like an awesome show since they had 3 guests, Jinjer, Poppy, and Architects.

My only dislike is the black and white video that they use in these official videos.

I agree. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. This is one of those times when it doesn't. Love the band, though.

ProfessorPeart

I realized that what I thought about this band was wrong. I assumed they were wall to wall screamo/growl. A buddy keeps asking if I had checked them out since he knows I am a huge Jinjer fan.

Well, I went to the their Bandcamp last night and starting listening to their stuff. Man, was I wrong. He was right to push me into these guys. I did the 'buy the whole collection' deal on their Bandcamp and picked everything up for $30. Color me surprised when the first 4 tracks on their S/T is essentially a 15 min song.

I will be digging into this stuff over the next week.

I think a lot of people's first exposure to them was "Holy Roller", which has a crazy music video and seems to get a lot of shares and reaction videos and such.  That one is all growls, and they have a number of others like it that are popular.  But then they have songs like "Constance" which has no growls at all, and even has an acoustic version which isn't even that heavy.  Some songs are more metalcore-ish with jagged riffing, some are extremely melodic.  Not really a super wide range of styles per se, but for the alt rock-metalcore range there's something for just about everyone.  And as you pointed out, "The Mara Effect" is kind of proggy, a 3-part suite with more changes and technical elements, sort of TesseracT-like.

cramx3

Yeah, I'm a big fan of their stuff that is more mellow. The Summit for example is one of my favorite songs by them.

Holy Roller and a song like Soft Spine seem to be the more popular style of the band, but for me, it's the variety that makes them stand out. Courtney has a great voice beyond the screams.

LithoJazzoSphere

Yeah, her harsh vocals are fine, but it's the cleans that drew me in.  "The Summit" is definitely a favorite, "Eternal Blue" and "We Live in a Strange World" are two others for all-cleans.

I basically have zero knowledge of the band. I think I might have listened to one song on Sirius XM while I still had it a few years ago, maybe had a certain impression of the sound and didn't bother to explore more.

Might be time to change that :) starting from self titled is good?

So I listened to both the self titled and Eternal Blue. Fascinating stuff, for sure.

It's interesting, some stuff is 100% in my wheelhouse (a song like The Summit, for example), some not so much...the screaming is a bit tough...I mean, obviously I don't mind harsh vocals, as there's plenty of those in my listening. It's just that this kind of screaming I find a little harder to digest and appreciate. That said, the intensity is hard NOT to appreciate :) it's all very powerful when it gets heavy. And it's not always obvious for me in this particular, djenty context. The heavy stuff does hit hard.

Also, there seems to be a lot of care in the arrangements. Again, a little more depth than I'd have expected.

So, there might be some hurdles for this to get to "great" status for me (who knows, though?), but there's some seriously good stuff here.

I guess there are some other singles/EPs to check out next, based on the posts above?

There's the EP from last year The Fear of Fear and they just released the new single Soft Spine.  I actually don't have the self titled.

It took a while for me to get there vocally as well.  Obviously I'd gotten fairly well acquainted with more general extreme metal vocals for quite some time, but more metalcore-styled vocals generally weren't to my taste, and I kind of put up them at times to hear the occasional melodeath-adjacent melodic metalcore band like Killswitch Engage.  Discovering Red Handed Denial (who have some parallels and similarities with Spiritbox) shortly into the pandemic started breaking down the doors for me.  I found Spiritbox a year later when Eternal Blue was starting to get some hype elsewhere, and it started clicking more.  Her harsh vocals are still not my favorite, but I'm fine with them now, and have found a variety of other bands I like that are in a vaguely similar ballpark, though it's still broadly a style I'm pickier about than most.

Here are some other favorite songs of Spiritbox's that have a larger dosage of cleans and aren't on the two releases you've heard so far - "Blessed Be", "Hysteria", "Jaded", "Perennial", "Rotoscope", "Sew Me Up", "The Void", "Trust Fall", "Ultraviolet", "Too Close/Too Late".  Most of those are on the EPs of The Singles Collection, Rotoscope, and The Fear of Fear, though a couple aren't on an LP or EP.
