Prog metal? I mostly listen to prog rock, there is not much prog metal that I listen to. SX and Devin are the only really metally artists that I listen to, and I don't listen to anything near their heaviest songs. There are so many metal bands these days with extreme metal elements that ones without them seem softer, and traditional metal probably feels like rock to the younger crowds.

Curious to see how that works for people.  I think everyone in the roulette is about twice as old as him or more (some three times, some four), and if my parents sent their favorites, a lot of it didn't stick with me (though some did).  But then no one in this roulette really has anything resembling conventional taste.

I've been wondering what my approach will be. Send my favorites or send gateway bands. I could probably stick to sending songs strictly from 2009

That's a good point...some of the classics may land, and some may fall flat. I mean, I know I won't go all Pearl Harbor on the kid, that'd be a great way to end up dead last.

I 100% know pretty much everything I listen to now, 14 year old me would've hated. As much as I'd love to send a band like Thy Catafalque, for instance, I know it'd fall flat with the background Caleb has. That is not at all a knock, as Caleb also has way better taste than I ever did at 14

I've definitely thought and said variations of that before.  There are some people that can just dive right into the deep end of styles, but for the majority it's a long and slow process of gradually unlocking doors, which lead to other doors, and doors locked behind those and so forth.  Or maybe it's like video game levels and difficulty settings.  If you stroll right up to the final boss without doing enough leveling up and grinding, you're toast.  There are some final bosses I'll probably never be able to slay.

By that logic, young Caleb isn't quite ready to read the complexity of your posts. I'd start him off with some Kingshmegland.
