This is extremely tough

1. Afterlife/Status Seeker
2. Learning to Live
3. Space-Dye Vest
4. Lines in the Sand
5. Home
6. Losing Time/Grand Finale or if that doesn't count The Glass Prison
7. In the Name of God

9. Prophets of War
10. The Count of Tuscany
11. Beneath the Surface
12. The Bigger Picture
13. The Gift of Music
14. Barstool Warrior

Aah great idea!!

1. Afterlife
2. Learning to Live
3. Voices
4. Trial of Tears
5. One Last Time*
6. Misunderstood

10. The Count of Tuscany
11. Breaking All Illusions
12. The Bigger Picture
13. The Path That Divides
14. At Wit's End
15. Transcending Time

* This is the highlight of the album for me because of the way it wraps up the themes from elsewhere in the album. It's a weird one to be a favorite, I'd never listen to it on its own... but then I'd never listen to a single song from the album anyway

I&W is my favorite album and I love ALL songs on it. Yet, interestingly, Learning to Live is such a masterpiece to me that it was a relatively easy pick. Awake is my second favorite DT album, and it was harder to pick a song. Admittedly, SDV is a bit atypical, so one could argue against that. But it's a top 10 DT tune for me, and one that gives me goosebumps to this day, so I went with it. Voices, Scarred, The Mirror and Lifting Shadows would all be plausible candidates for me, though.

Agreed, every song on I&W is amazing but Learning to Live is an easy favourite for me. Every melody and riff is just iconic, I love the way it all unfolds.

My list:
  • Afterlife
  • Learning to Live
  • Lie
  • Trial of Tears
  • Finally Free
  • The Glass Prison*
  • Honor Thy Father
  • Octavarium
  • In the Presence of Enemies Pt 1
  • The Count of Tuscany
  • Breaking All Illusions
  • The Bigger Picture
  • Moment of Betrayal
  • Pale Blue Dot
  • A View From The Top Of The World

The other one I find hard to pick is Six Degrees, as it was my first album it's very nostalgic for me and I love all the songs. I've gone with Glass Prison for now but that can change any day.

Love to see Misunderstood on your list! That song is my second favorite off that album, and is dear to me. It resonates with me, as the lyrics apply very well to someone who has suffered with long term chronic illness.

Good idea and frightfully hard thing to do :D

1 - WDADU - The Ytse Jam (just because it was the first song I learned and played it so many times)
2 - I&W - Take the time (Hard to choose with metropolis and Learning to Live)
3 - Awake - Erotomania (for the same reason as Ytse Jam, I'm a LTE instrumental fan lol)
4 - FII - lines in the sand
5 - SFAM - The dance of eternity (but I'd say the whole act2 if I could)
6 - SDOIT - the whole six degrees suite (the glass prison and blind faith are masterpieces tho)
7 - TOT - Honor thy father (in the name of god is just behind)
8 - Octavarium - Octavarium
9 - SC - In the presence of enemies pt1&2 (the dark eternal night 2nd)
10 - BCSL - The Count Of Tuscany (nightmare beautiful agony tells me I'm wrong)
11 - ADTOE - Bridges In The Sky (but breaking all illusion)
12 - DT12 - Illumination Theory (even if I love the false awakening suite, enemy inside and enigma machine)
13 - TA - heaven's cove because it's the best tristram diablo2 kind of theme sound alike that sounds so good lol (dystopian overture, lord nafaryus, three days, a life left behind, a new beginning, moment of betrayal, path that divides, all have SUPER strong parts tho)
14 - DOT - At Wits End (untethered angel, fall into the light and its hammond, barstool warrior, pale blue dot and viper king are all so great...)
15 - VFTTOTW - The alien (and many are great too)

The more I thought about it the more it has been impossible for me to choose 1 of each lol
I'll try to edit and trim my answer.

Nice list, hun.
Despite being of tall and muscular stature and with a high powered corporate counsel job to boot, I have the tastes of a sensitive man. One would be surprised to learn that I often associate more with DT's softer, more 'in-touch' side. Here are my favorites.

Six Degrees - Goodnight Kiss
Train of Thought - Vacant
Octavarium - I Walk Beside You

first post here :)

A Fortune in Lies - really fun. I think there's a gravity and emotionality to the chorus that I really appreciate.
Metropolis - the all-time classic, the prechorus part has all the theatricality that I want to hear in the band.
Voices - super cool, menacing, great vocal parts.
Burning My Soul - an underappreciated experiment I guess. I like nu-metal and the band does it fairly well here, it's a bit underwritten though.
Finally Free - again properly theatrical! 'One Last Time' theme coming back is also so sick.
The Glass Prison - astounding, some of their best melodies, this direction with Mike's vocals works so well for them.
Endless Sacrifice - I dig again the slight nu-metal influence on the chorus. Great pop metal song.
The Root of all Evil - another very well-constructed 'pop metal' type song.
Forsaken - I've always liked their shorter and more focused material, I find this works better for me than the other SC songs.
A Rite of Passage - maybe a bit too long, but a fun song, the vocal harmonies in the chorus add so much for me.
Bridges in the Sky - maybe the best Mangini-era song to me. Such a powerful climax!
The Enemy Inside - a great 'pop metal' type song, this is a real place of comfort for the band.
(don't dig 'the Astonishing')
At Wit's End - solid. I enjoy this song but I don't think the hooks come out at first, still my favourite on the record.
A View from on Top of the World - one of their most interesting epics, very experimental in ways but with a banger chorus.

Solitary Shell is the best song off of disc 2.

That's a great list. I, too, consider Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence to be one long masterpiece of a composition.

I guess it depends on how you listen to it. I always listen to it from the beginning through the end. But I also listen to albums like that rather than individual songs. lol. Everyone I know just listens to playlists they've created on shuffle and I'm like ew. haha
