Is Distance Over Time not well liked or something? James introduced a song from it last night by saying something like 'we're gonna play a song off of... THAT one'

nobloodyname

He might have forgotten the name of it in the moment.

If I heard him say that, I would expect a track from The Astonishing!

He said the name of the album first.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Oh i guess i missed that. I found him a bit difficult to make out here and there in between songs

I agree, and he definitely seemed awkward at times. But he definitely said it.

Quote from: TheBarstoolWarrior on February 09, 2025, 11:10:39 AMYou are correct. It stops Mike individually from changing the tempo and having the others adjust to him, but doesn't stop the band from changing it in a choreographed manner.

Can you provide an example where this happened with DT on click? Outside of pre-designated tempo changes present on the studio versions of course. Because that was what my initial point was, that I think this type of dynamic tempo makes Dream Theater sound better. And no, not just +-3bpm~.

I love James but a lot of times his stage banter is as if he forgot what he was going to say mid sentence.

TheOutlawXanadu

The Raleigh show was amazing! The band was on fire. Looking forward to seeing them again in New York. :metal

Yeah, there was a moment in Philly that had me question wtf is he talking about?? And it seemed like he didn't even know.

I forget what I want to say mid-sentence now too, at times.:\  If I am thinking several things, it makes it harder. Its not an issue, per se, just an age thing and maybe a stage thing. I am barely younger than James.

Oh I stumble on my words all the time, I'm just not on stage doing it every night in front of people  :lol

I totally get it, it's not natural for him. It never has been and at this point, never will be (and the same would be said about myself).  Luckily stage banter doesn't correlate to the music.  Just one of the many things we nitpick here at DTF  :lol

There is no thread to put this that I can see yet, but Louder Than Life just announced that Dream Theater will be playing there this September. So I guess there will be a fall US tour around that time.

I'll be at the Wallingford Connecticut show March 14. Anyone else????

Quote from: elfriedejelinek on February 09, 2025, 09:24:46 AMThey really did a disservice to Mangini by introducing a click track. Portnoy's performance in this clip, and on this tour in general, is so dynamic, and energetic. It's a tired cliché but he really grooves, and tastefully modulates the tempo (as was pointed out by JP in a recent interview). Mangini probably could've brought this energy, but he was held back. Sure, Mangini could've chosen to not follow the given tempos so strictly, but the band and stage production were relying on him to keep the beat going steady which he, of course, delivered night after night for 10 years. It's great to see Dream Theater going for a proper rock show approach again.

I'll add to this saying that Mangini was one of the best drummers out there to play without a click because his sense of tempo and subtle tempo changes is amazing.

A lot of the things that people dislike about MM's era could actually be attributed to JP and production decisions. But that has also been said already so...

Long live DT! Very glad with the return of the live energy and a lot of the things MP brings with him

Very late to the game but I got emotional hearing Overture 1928 and Octavarium live in NC. James sounding great other than belting during the chill parts of Hollow Years was the icing on the cake. The setlist and the energy on stage felt so special.

I just wish the Night Terror visuals weren't poor AI when it wasn't the live action shot of the girl. Looked pretty cheap.

Totally.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

We've got time to plan, but I know I'm going to head down early and grab a beer at Archie Moore's, like we've done before. We can also meet at the parking lot just before the venue.

Just got out of the Nashville show - James mentioned he's been fighting a pretty bad cold for about two weeks, and unfortunately it showed a bit, especially towards the end of the 2nd set. But - he still sounded miles better than he did on the DreamSonic tour, at least to my untrained ears.

They did cut Home from the encore sadly - guessing he just knew that one wasn't going to work given his issues.

Otherwise, it was a fantastic show - really glad we're going to see them twice on this leg. Great having Portnoy back in the fold, I had forgotten how much energy he brings to the show.

Also - Neal Morse was in attendance tonight at the Grand Ole Opry. Seemed to be having a great time - although I *did* wonder what he may have been thinking during The Dark Eternal Night  ;D

Really, the visuals of this tour are truly incredible! Also I'm very happy that they brought back the N.A.D.S. videoclip from the SC tour, it's classic.

Finally got around to watching this. The Dark Eternal Night is always fantastically good fun (particularly) live and this was a brilliant performance of it. James sounded great, too.

I'm still undecided about CT, but I already got my ticket for RCMH. I'll let you know if I decide to go to CT as well

So glad to hear it was a good show.  It still freaks me out a little that DT played the Grand Ole Opry House.  Talk about a legendary venue.

My family and I were here in Nashville about a year and a half ago, and as our two daughters are huge Country music fans, we did the Grand Ole Opry tour (which was excellent) - little did I know my wife and I would be coming back for a DT show. The world can be a funny place sometimes...
