Learn Me About Dubstep
« on: October 17, 2013, 04:32:00 PM »
What is it?

What are some good/bad examples?

Where should I start if I want to listen and see if it's something I might be interested in?

I'm no expert but to keep it simple it's electronic dance music with a mix of drum and bass with lots of rythm patterns and bass lines containing low frequencies.

The most famous one within that scene is I guess Skrillex:

and here's some remixes:

Here's some other one's I like:

Even though i'm not a massive fan, as a drummer it's cool hearing dubstep with lot's of rythmic patterns. Here's some cool drumline examples:

Burial, easily the best dubstep artist.

Alright so I'm a huge, huge dubstep fan. Boom Shack-a-lack pretty much hit the nail on the head with the description. Dubstep is just a part of EDM music. There are a lot of subgenres, the easiest I find to get into is chillstep:

Blackmill - Let It Be - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sDI6HTR9arA

Then you can get into some more harder stuff if your interested:

Seven Lions - Isis - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIo14jKF9uI
Mr. FijiWiji - Apathy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qstMjEH5pk

There are also some really talented remix's done of great trance songs:

Above & Beyond - Sun & Moon - Eric Farias Mix - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oc3Mtwdk2as

Next song isn't really dubstep but it's a phenomenal remix:

Temper Trap - Sweet Disposition - Alto Remix - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nrZe0MPj24M

Check those songs out, those go over fairly well with people new to dubstep.

EDIT: How can I forget Excision, he makes some intense dubstep mixes, check out his newest Shamabhala - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFd7MHcYW1o

Dubstep is totally fun when they play it at my rock gym. As a genre it (IMHO) has a bit of the problem that everything sounds alike quite a bit.

My son's Youtube channel ...he is producing mixing EDM music for about 2 years now

https://www.youtube.com/user/subsonicedm

He's already partnered with youtube and a couple of European artists

The most interesting stuff:

Burial - Chill out, but musically more interesting than any other dubstep producer. He's in a league of his own.

Kahn - Makes the most dark, groovy dubstep out there.

Benton - Same as above.

Digital Mystikz - Same as above.

Kryptic Minds - Same as above.

Submotion Orchestra - Is a jazz/dubstep band. Check out the track 'Backchat' for a dark instrumental track, and 'All Yours' for a lovely vocal dubstep/jazz track.

James Blake - I'm sure you've already heard about him.

Krampfhaft - Dutch artist that makes trap-infused dubstep music. VERY party.

For your average hard 'brostep' just play Trolley Snatcha, Cookie Monsta and that kind of stuff.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

Burial, Submotion Orchestra and Kryptic Minds are all great shouts. Skrillex imho is terrible, I really don't get on with brostep. Rusko has some cool tunes too and probably is partly responsible for the development of Skrillex's sound.

Great, thanks for the start everyone.  I'm not saying I'm going to get "into it" but it's definitely cool and something I want to be familiar with.
