The reason is SFAM was the first self-produced effort by the band.  Their relationship with the record company led up to that.  The record itself (FII) had nothing to do with it.
OK.

Not unless they were not happy with the Production/direction or if they thought it was artistically restrictive.

Sam, perhaps some of what you say may be true but...

People that dislike it don't dislike it because MP dislikes it.  Most new fans actually like it.  Most people who dislike it (or rank it lower than most others) are people who loved Images & Words and then loved Awake, and then got FII.  It was a huge letdown.  SFAM redeemed DT for me.

This is the truth right here.

I was a huge fan and I remember getting FII the day it came out. The first thing I noticed was the change in band name font. Then New Millenium started the CD. It starts off OK, but it always struck me that they tried to hard to recreate a Metropolis type song. That was my first impression. Now, I can appreciate the Rush influences, but I thought it (the song) was a relatively weak attempt.

I've mentioned this in a couple other threads recently. FII has aged well for 2 reasons.
1. It's easily DT's best sounding album
2. It creates a great dichotomy to 3 of the last 4 DT albums.

Even back then I thought it was only good for 3 songs..Lines In The Sand, Peruvian Skies, aand Trial Of Tears. The 04 reworking of Hollow Years, the 05 reworking of JLMB, not to mention the original BMS played in 02 has also helped enhance these limited songs.

Thanks TAC. These are my feelings as well, but in every thread about FII I get accused of being an MP sheep because it's my least favorite DT record. "shrugs"

OK.

Yeah, my last sentence was pretty dumb.  I was thinking about all the circumstances surrounding the album, not the album itself.  Sorry.

Yes, that makes sense.

Possibly the most underrated song in DT history. The keyboard riff is incredible, and doubled up with JM's chapman stick makes it even better. The instrumental unison is also insane. I reckon DT should use the chapman stick again at some point, it sounds so good!

I love this song, but I admittedly don't care for the second verse at all. I made an edit where it skips straight from the first chorus to the instrumental section and it is so much better. The instrumental section is really great.

I dig this song.  By the way, is there going to be a separate thread now for EVERY SONG IN THE CATALOGUE?!?  :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

Lol...I was literally getting ready to type the same thing.

Well, the thread was started in 2010!

I'll never forget when, in 2010 weirdly enough, I decided to "force myself" to like this song. I mostly just thought it was boring, a 5/10 track that didn't mean much. So I put it on repeat and just waited, played Halo or Counter-Strike while it played, and then, on listen six or seven in a row, I realized I was singing along to it. By listen ten I was outright groovin'. Now? That song really holds such a place in my heart for the liberation of Falling Into Infinity being a righteous album after all.
Half of my posts are satire; the other half are serious. If you can't tell which half you're looking at, it's probably the former. I enjoy busting chops amongst likeminded fellows. Where better to feel at home than among the fans of the world's most fun band? :)

Not sure how a bottom 5 song can be underrated.   :)
Feelin' kinda spooky.

Cool Chris

I didn't follow DT in the 90s via magazines/e-zines/news groups, so I didn't know there was a new album after Awake until I saw it in the music store, and didn't know there was a new guy on keys until I looked at the booklet. I was still on a post-I&W and Awake high, so I fired up this baby and said LET'S GO! And I got.... this song. Eh... what is this? There were hints of the DT I knew in there, but they were buried among the muck.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Love NM. Wasn't a fan until just after SFAM so not bothered about direction changes. I like a little variety.

My favourite live DT moment is them opening with it in a small-ish London venue on the 6D tour.
