I like it.  It's not there worst song.  It's not even the worst song on FII.

There are only two good things about You Not Me:

1) the original "You or Me".
2) the "Me Not You" coalition.

I thought it was Us Not You.

Correct... brain fart.

Looks like it's time for your nap, Grandpa. :p

gotta go take my teeth out first.

So I just checked, and, uh, you are one of the two who haven't sent.

In the liner notes for the FII Demos, MP suggested that he'd like to add "You Or Me" to the setlist rotation, but that never happened, and I don't know how likely that is now that he's gone.

I love this song... being in 10th grade, getting dumped... it's just perfect. The sharpness in the way he yells "IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU! NAAAHT MEEEEEE!" is so vitriolic.

Nope. I think what makes me dislike it even more is that it isn't You Or Me, an awesome song that would've worked so much better on the album

Yeah, if you've ever been in a one-sided relationship, the lyrics of YNM ring true.  Poppy or not.

robwebster

Groovy riff at the end, nice little instrumental break... it's nothing mindblowing, but a perfectly serviceable little rock song. I like it.

Dublagent66

It has its moments, but I don't love it.  It's just ok.

*moderately appreciates*

Great solo. Pretty decent song. I don't get the problem tbh. You Or Me is obv better, but there's not a huge difference between the two.

Infinite Cactus

I think the big reason I like You Or Me Better is the chorus. Both are pretty close, I just prefer the chorus in You or Me Better. I did however, have an Idea to make a mix of the two where the first time is the YOM chorus and the second time through is YNM chorus. If I get the time soon I'll get on it. Call it You Nor Me or something.

Raoul Sanchez

It's not especially good by any stretch, but it doesn't sound bad to me. I'd rank it above something like Prophets of War.

mocool13

I don't know why it gets so much hate; as someone else said, it's a nice, serviceable rock song. I actually prefer it to "You or Me."

I like the chorus in the former moreso than the latter.

And the solo is petty nice.

lol @ you.

Great song to rock out too in the car. Also, Raise The Knife.

Amen!

Actually, I can't even decide whether I prefer You Not Me or You OR Me. I like them both completely equally for different reasons.

Nice to see this thread get brought up again. At the time I made this, I didn't really care for the song. Now I really like it!

That's because you're a wise man..... :tup

Lowdz

Suffers unfairly with the stigma of Desmond Child being involved. There are songs on FII I enjoy less- BMS, JLMB, NM. For the record I like Desmond Child and own lots of albums with his songs on, including his solo record Discipline.
I prefer the album version to the demo, including the chorus, but I don't see a huge difference between the two. FII version tighter with the shortened chorus.

TheGreatPretender

Okay, I understand using Acronyms for the albums, but I think people need to just summon up that lack of laziness and actually type out the titles if the songs. BMS, NM mean nothing to me. And I'm still trying to figure out what IWBY stands for.

Digging this up to say that Rock Candy Magazine made a FB post the other day asking "What's Your Favorite Dream Theater Song?"  Much to my surprise, at least two people said 'You Not Me'.  I thought it was pretty cool how diverse this fan base is. Anyway, carry on.

That's really weird.

Could have been sarcasm I suppose!

I have had different feelings about YNM at different times. I think initially when I heard FII I thought it was closest to sounding like DT of the stuff on the album. I don't hate it, but it's not especially exciting. You Or Me does seem to have a better vibe about it, and I think the chorus hits a little harder since it flows more naturally from the pre-chorus and stays in the same groove as the rest of the song.
Quote from: TAC on December 12, 2024, 05:40:22 PM"No way" is kind of strong, but I do lean with HOF.

Since this is an appreciation thread...

I think like other lowest tier DT songs (A Rite of Passage, Constant Motion, Paralyzed), You Not Me does have a redeeming qualities. The main riff is good and that outro is pretty nifty.  The chorus is just not something I can appreciate at all.

Yeah, mostly because JLB had some higher notes on the chorus and because it was more of a traditional metal sounding tune. Compared to things like New Millenium, Peruvian Skies, Lines in the Sand, etc. which were really different stylistically from DT's earlier sound.

Oh, the other thing is it has those string synths between verses and on the outro which sound more like some of the synth sounds from Awake (think the chorus of Caught In A Web).
