Do you think it will dethrone Facebook?

Does anyone here have an invite? (I would certainly like to give it a try)

No, I would be shocked if it dethroned Facebook.  People aren't likely to change unless most of their friends do, better or not.  Google's had Orkut for years and taken it nowhere notable outside Latin America and a few other hot spots.

I wouldn't think so. Unless it is way better than FB it won't get anywhere. I'd compare it to every search engine that has been trying to compete with Google. They make their best try, but Google is better.

So yeah, I'm in it. It's quite nice I have to say, and off the cuff I have to say it's better than Facebook. Will it catch on? Not sure, that's always down to a lot of external factors.

Idk. I think Google could do a few things that would seriously rival Facebook. An implementation of a video chat would be a good selling point for me.

I've been using it, and it's really fucking boring when none of your friends are using it. But I feel like it has some good stuff, and potential to compete with facebook for now. Dethrone it? Not anytime soon. Also, facebook is revealing on wednesday that they are implementing video chat, most likely to compete with Google+.

We shall see how this plays out. I hope it doesn't go down like Buzz did though

Google's own Orkut has had that for years, now, I believe.  Yup, their big redesign of Orkut a couple years back brought a real wave of people over.

Google+ exists because Orkut is almost a complete flop for Google, particularly in North America.

I think Facebook has just grown far too big to be dethroned any time soon, even if Google+ does offer a better service. Let's face it, it wouldn't be hard to outdo Facebook on a technical level given how cumbersome and downright annoying it can be to use and navigate, but the fact that almost everyone is already on it and already using it makes it difficult to get people to use a competitive service. Anyone who would want to use Google+ as an alternative to Facebook is undoubtedly going to have most of their friends refuse to move because they have no problem with Facebook and as said, everyone already uses it.

About how the grouping thing works on Google+ I absolutely fucking love that. I've always had a bit of distaste of Facebooks "all or nothing" approach to Wall posting - I do feel restricted by what I can post on my Wall since I know that there would be people reading it that I would prefer not to be - certain messages I'd send to only specific friends and not everyone, or send to everyone with the exception of a few (who's parents don't use Facebook? Not many). That's the selling point on Google+ for me at the moment, so perhaps Facebook will take the idea

Just FYI, Facebook is announcing Skype integration this week. Microsoft seems to have a good relationship with Facebook, and they don't appear to be starting a social network of their own. So they'll probably try to help facebook beat back Google any way they can.

The only way I know for now is to mention their email in a post. Then they get a notification. There's a link to follow to "view the message" and you can then join.
