Good! So probably 8 songs 😁 I hope 3-4 over 10 minutes

fadetoblackdude7

My bet is 8-10 songs. I'll be surprised if there are more than 10.

I'll be pleasantly surprised if there are more than 10. I hope for 10 but of course quality over quantity.

I'm guessing around 70 minutes? No matter how many tracks.

Last 5 albums (excluding TA and according to Wikipedia):

DT12:  68:01
ADTOE:  77:01
BC&SL:  75:25
SC:  78:41
8VA:  75:44
Feelin' kinda spooky.

RMGadelha

Since this is supposed to be a heavier album, I wonder if one of the tracks will be considered DT's heaviest song. Of course, it's all speculation at this point xD

It would have to top ANTR which hold the record IMO

Yeah, it would quite the feat!  :metal
The Dark Eternal Night is also worth mentioning.

Cool Chris

Hope whatever it is turns out way better than either of those songs. At least I could 100% guarantee the vocal melodies would be much better.
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

RMGadelha

I love those two songs, so if there's similar stuff, I'll love it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Well some of the things ruining those songs for me came from MPs ideaa so I have hope that they will be better.

It's not automatically so, but if JP ended up utilizing his 8-string there's a possibility of unheard-of heaviness.

This is actually the first DT release I'm excited for since 6DoIT which, back then, turned out to be a disappointment. I lost much of my love for the band in the years following that and stopped attending shows after being bored out of my skull at an 8vm show. I did check back in on the boys whenever they released an album or a DVD, but it always felt like a guilty pleasure at best rather than something I could wholeheartedly cherish anymore. Surprisingly enough The Astonishing finally provided a breath of fresh air that brought me back into the fold and I really hope that DT14 carries on in a similarly inspired and focused streak.

When they say the album is going to be heavier, I'm assuming that they just mean that it is heavier than the last one (which wouldn't be too hard!). I'm not expecting this to be a super heavy Train Of Thought style album but maybe I'm wrong.

Max Kuehnau

I'm at a point now where I'll gratefully accept everything they do. (Mike M is one reason but also their general attitude post-Portnoy) I'm sure I'll love it. Bring it on.

Vandalism

I would like them to have more obscure song structures. TA had a lot of those and I absolutely loved it. I hope no more than 50% of the new album has the 'verse-chorus-verse-interlude-solo-chorus' kind of song structure.

I think and I hope there will not be very heavy songs. They just said it will be harder than TA

nikatapi

I wonder who has written the vocal melodies for MM's lyrics, maybe James? Really curious to see how Mike's lyrics are, as he is a very intellectual person.

Zydar

I know nothing about MM's past, but has he written lyrics before his time in DT?

Good to hear.... I love TA but there are a lot of naysayers about.

I absolutely agree! I even asked Jordan that, when Noxon collected questions here on the forum. He went more into detail of the thought process behind composing The Astonishing, and why the songs were made that way, he didn't really answer in a "yes/no" straight way wether they'd feel inspired to keep the weird songs structures approach, but I hope they've kept some of that mentality for DT14.

They should write, example, a full 2-minutes song whenever they feel like doing it, not just because the plot of an album demands it.

I would be fine with a 55-60 minute album to be honest with no filler moments.

Loved that, too. It really kept the flow of The Astonishing going!

If the little samples we were given are any indication, I doubt it will be like ToT. At best, perhaps at the level of heaviness of SC, but even then, they've stated that they've been influenced by playing the whole IaW album on the last tour, so I would imagine it would be at the level of IaW or maybe Awake.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
