You see, this one can be spelled "Dream Theatre."

That must be why they're playing their first show back in London. It all makes sense!

All future albums will simply be titled Dream Theater.  They won't have the band's name on the cover or any listing of songs, etc.

In reality, the album will be called OCTABARNS!!!
Octabarns and Blastbears!!!

IMO it's not even worth serious discussion, but I have a hard time imagining the record label even agreeing to release a second self titled album. Can you imagine the marketing headache that would create?

Well, I mean, it's not the same label as the last self-titled album and it's been over ten years...but, yeah. I highly doubt the band would do another self-titled album. Dream Theater II: Metropolis Pt. 3: Nicholas opens his eyes, gets stabbed? 😁😝

Doesn't matter that it's a different label. It's the same band that already has a self titled album in the discography and is going to be confusing when people try to pull that album up on streaming services/etc.

I mean, every Switchblade album is titled Switchblade and they have 8 albums now. Not to mention 2 EPs and a compilation album titled Switchblade  :lol

I quite dislike the self titled thing in general, no matter what band. I still can't believe DT did that since the fans are passionate and do care about the full package (not just the songs themselves) a lot. D/T is maybe a bit more DT way of doing it at least.

Not sure MP would go the route of having a self titled. He seem to have a passion for the titles, artwork etc. that I am not feeling JP had. Going from BC&SL (just artwork, naming etc.) to ADTOE was a considerable downgrade. TA has terrible artwork and self titled at least fit the generic artwork. Having MP back makes me hyped for the actual album name & artwork again 😊 ...  but I could be wrong.

Anyway I heard from a secret source very close to the band that this will indeed be the double album sequel we all been waiting for. Raw Dog Part 2: Hot Dog.

jammindude

I can't believe the idea has even warranted this much discussion. The very idea is ludicrous and I can't believe I'm even forced to point that out.

IMO, Lax should be given a warning for basically pulling turds out of his ass and slinging it at the wall to see if it sticks.

Lax

Hi, I'm sorry I didn't post the link with it, I'm searching if I happen to see it again !
In the mass of social media stuff I read daily, I happened to have this sentence about it being eponymous and it was with portnoy's head on the article.
If it's a french mistake or something that wasn't that I apologize by advance.

I'll post what it was asap

I can understand a debut album being named like the band, there are many iconic ones: Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath.... but naming a random album as the band? it'd better be the undisputed masterpiece of the band, otherwise it's gonna come off as a poor gimmick.

Generally I kinda like DT12, but is it worth of being called just like the band? no way. Probably only Images and Words was worth of being a self titled album.

Zydar

How about naming your first album "Greatest Hits". That would be a bold move of self-belief. Or delusion :lol

I want a confirmed album cover so I can make one of those MS Paint threads again :P

Was "Genesis" a gimmick?  That was their, what, 12th record?  "The Beatles"?  That was their 10th, if you count "Magical Mystery Tour" (you can do the math if you don't :)).

Cheap Trick has two self-titled records (1977 and I think 1997).   Bob Dylan has three (well, sort of; there's Bob Dylan, Dylan, and Dylan).  Fleetwood Mac has two, as does Duran Duran.   Peter Gabriel, technically, has four.  Seal has three.  Sam Hagar, Ratt, and Quiet Riot all have two, as does Queensryche if you count the EP.

I think we're scraping the bottom of the barrel here for things to criticize the band over.  Not unprecedented at DTF, I grant you, but still... :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

The German band Roy Bianco & Die Abbrunzati Boys did that. Quite funny actually.

Isn't every Chicago album titled Chicago?

Not quite, but most of them include "Chicago" in the title, often followed by a Roman Numeral, and sometimes a subtitle. Their 12th album was the first not to feature "Chicago" in the title, with a few others doing the same later on (but they are the minority in terms of naming convention).

In general I would say most of those are pretty gimmicky yes.

I like DT12 a lot, it's one of my favorites by the band, but the self titled thing was clearly a gimmick at the time to establish a narrative about the Mangini era being the definitive DT era.

gzarruk

That's why I don't trust anything said by Petrucci and Co. in regards to these things anyore :lol

As for the new album title, if they really really wanted to make it self-titled (again) just name it Majesty. It's that simple.

Sounds like it was a French article, so unless you understand French, you probably wouldn't. Wouldn't surprise me if Lax did in fact come across an article that was from 2013 that he either missed seeing a 2013 date, or someone mis-dated the article intentionally or unintentionally.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

That would be hilarious and awesome if true. If so, the article would have referenced Mangini and not Portnoy for one of a million things.

The name would be Album McAlbumface

First off, welcome to the forums!

Second off, I also recall this rumor, and I posted about it in one of the new album threads a few months back. I can't remember which account it was, or find the post (or my post linking it). But it was months ago and if nothing came of that rumor then, I doubt there is any truth to it now (without further evidence).

EDIT: I think it was bluesky
