Yes. To keep things simple, the second note and the third note form a flatted fifth (aka tritone) which is a very dissonant interval. It's used quite a bit in blues (blue note), metal, and jazz.

Because it is highly dissonant, It's an attention-grabbing sound, especially when you're harping on it or repeating it.

Probably says more about me than you, but this whole flattened fifth discussion has me just wondering how the heck we got here... Part of me is so impressed folks out there are into this sort of thing (and fair enough with a technical band like DT), while another part of me just has an ice cream headache... :coolio

Best example of a flat 5 interval for the dtf crowd is the intro to YYZ. The relationship between those two notes, that make that dissonant sound, is a flat 5. A perfect 5th (aka not flat or sharp) creates the basis of a powerchord, which should be a familiar sound to anyone who's heard any rock song ever.

Love your profile pic, sneakyblueberry; a truly amazing album, as is everything done by Toby Driver.

Indeed.  Please leave that silliness over there.

Was the snippet of JLB's information offered not relevant to "A Broken Man" ???

Personally, I really liked his explanation of the lyric he wrote.  I like getting insights like this and I wish DT (and other bands) would do it more often.

Honestly, I didn't even look/listen to it given your goatee comment.

It was about the single, just to confirm. He mentions that he wrote the ABM lyrics and discusses the inspiration/themes.

Did we know that JLB wrote these lyrics already? I thought I saw someone say that it screams Petrruci lyrics

So you're finding loopholes now to infiltrate other threads with this.  :lol

Pettor

This song has been on repeat for several days now. Went from weak 7/10 to a strong 8/10. I made some snark comment about the lyrics and must have been deaf at the time. Great stuff! I just had to adapt my expectations a bit and take it for what it is to start appreciate it.

Glad to hear you're warming up to the song!  That's the thing with DT songs, if you let it sit with you for a while (sometimes years in my case), it gets better or finally "clicks".

Obviously this won't happen to everyone, and there are still plenty of DT songs that I never listen to anymore, but I never completely dismiss a song, because one day it might creep up on me.

Back on-topic, it's interesting on my headphones anyway that despite it being produced by JP I feel the guitar could be little louder and the drums a little quieter. Just a little. I still like the song a lot, but that intro is too long.

nobloodyname

Whereas for me, it could be longer. I absolutely love the build up, best part of the song, and more could have been made of it.

Love the intro. Love the first two lead-in keyboard parts prior to the main solo. Don't Love the main key solo as that signature sound JR uses just doesn't feel like a natural, warm instrument. Also can't seem to get warmed up to JP's solo. Feels like it swings itself into alternate universe where a different song is being played.

Shadowmangini

Only 59 days until the album comes out. That's not that far away. 59 days ago was 10/12/2024, and if you recall, Night Terror had been out for two days already after its 10/10 release. Time flies. Those singles being nearly two months apart doesn't feel right yet it is!

My first impression was "vocals kind of boring" .
I only heard the song twice, but I now have the chorus stuck in my head.
Maybe the melodies are a little bit more interesting that I thought of at first.
